New York Sues to Dissolve Trump Foundation, Cites Illegal Conduct

New York attorney general sues Trump Foundation

The lawsuit reportedly seeks $2.8 million in restitution and to bar Trump and his three eldest children, Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump and Eric Trump from the boards of NY nonprofits for one year.

The foundation and Trump Organization spokespeople have not responded to requests for comment from the AP.

The lawsuit seeks $2.8 million in restitution, additional unspecified penalties and the dissolution of the foundation, which Trump had already pledged to dismantle.

The suit names the president, sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, and daughter Ivanka Trump, who were on the board of the foundation. The lawsuit alleges that the foundation's board of directors has been willfully engaged in violations of state and federal law.

Schneiderman, the former state attorney general, resigned in May but the suit was filed by Underwood.

The suit filed today in NY state court describes how shortly before the Iowa caucuses in January 2016, Trump skipped a candidates' debate on Fox News and instead held a fundraiser for military veterans that attracted $5.6 million, half of which went to the Trump Foundation.

The Trump campaign, at the time, said the foundation meant to cooperate with the investigation. It claims that the foundation came to be "co-opted" by the campaign.

Raccoon scales Minnesota office tower, leaving public in suspense
There is a live trap on the roof of the building with some very aromatic cat food they hope will lure the raccoon to safety. Not prepared to take a hint, it headed to the neighboring UBS tower - one of the tallest buildings in the city.

The Trump Foundation issued a statement criticising the lawsuit as "politics at its very worst" and accusing the attorney general of holding its $1.7 million in remaining funds "hostage for political gain". "This is unheard of for a charitable foundation".

In keeping with federal tax rules, the charity's incorporation documents say none of its resources can directly or indirectly go to the benefit its directors or officers and none of its activities can benefit any political candidate or campaign.

Elizabeth MacDonald said the NY state attorney general's lawsuit against the Donald J. Trump Foundation is a "scathing rebuke of a sitting president".

The foundation lawsuit and the referrals to the federal agencies are the latest of Mr. Trump's voluminous legal challenges, starting with the ongoing investigation by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, into ties between Mr. Trump, his associates and Russian Federation.

Bondi later said there were not many complaints about Trump University in Florida, and she strongly denied any connection to the political donation, which she personally solicited.

A major part of Underwood's lawsuit is an accusation that the president allowed his political campaign to control the distribution of $2.8 million that he had raised at a January 2016 fundraiser for veterans.

Then Trump's foundation was "co-opted" by his presidential campaign, particularly in the run-up to the Iowa caucuses, the lawsuit says.
