Toddlers Consume More 'Added Sugar' Than The Recommended Amount For Adults

Too sweet

Another serious situation shapes up in the USA, as a recent study carried out by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) revealed an increasingly higher added sugar consumption in toddlers.

The researchers pointed out that toddlers really should be getting sugar from fruits and vegetables, not from foods with added sugar.

Added sugar is sugar that's put in food during preparation or processing. A promising strategy for reducing kids' sugar intake is to get them used to healthy eating before they turn two.

Lead study author Kirsten Herrick, a nutritional epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said, "This is the first time we have looked at added sugar consumption among children less than 2 years old..."

Accordingly, kids between 1 and 2 years of age were consuming added sugar nearly exclusively and the consumed amount is equal to 7 teaspoons of sugar per day.

Extra sugar consumption has been linked to high levels of obesity, cavities, asthma, and risk factors for heart disease later in life.

Net Neutrality Repeal Goes Into Effect
Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few months, you've heard about the impending death of net neutrality. OR passed similiar legislation, but it won't go into effect until next year, as Motherboard reports .

According to both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association, children under the age of 2 shouldn't consume foods or drinks with added sugars at all. Regardless of the recommendations, most people in the US eat more than this limit, research shows. The finding showed that the amount of added sugar consumed increased with the age of a child. "These data may be relevant to the upcoming 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans", she said in a society news release.

The 2015 to 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans state that sweetened beverages are the major source of added sugars in typical USA diets-in fact, they account for 47% of all added sugars consumed by Americans.

The demographic that ate the most sugar were non-Hispanic black children aged between 12 to 23 months, while white children ate the least. According to the CDC children under the age of 2 should not get added sugar at all. In order to evaluate added sugar consumption, the researchers included any calorie-containing sugars such as high-fructose corn syrup but excluded naturally occurring sugars such as fruits.

What can parents do to reduce their kids' sugar intake?

However, added sugars are considered more damaging to health because they displace nutritional components of foods and contribute significantly to caloric intake.

The research team also plans to examine the specific sources of added sugar young children are consuming in the future. Other studies have identified ready-to-eat cereals, bakery items and other desserts, sugar-sweetened beverages, yogurt and candy to be significant sources of added sugar in children's diets. Contact the media team for more information or to obtain a free press pass to attend the meeting. As such, the findings presented should be considered preliminary until a peer-reviewed publication is available.
