US military in Korea says no guidance on cancelling war games

Trump-Kim summit vindicates Cold War doctrine of deterrence

CBS News' David Martin reports that Pentagon spokesperson Dana White said Defense Secretary James Mattis "was not surprised".

While most of the agreements confirmed to have come out of the Trump-Kim summit were pretty straightforward, advancing on the already discussed denuclearization, the meeting also ended with an announcement that the U.S. will suspend all joint military exercises with South Korea.

On Monday evening, Pompeo said that the US' "ultimate objective" remains the complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, and that Washington is willing to provide "unique security assurances" if Pyongyang agrees to do so.

President Donald Trump, for whom disarming the reclusive nation has been a key foreign policy goal since taking office, called the summit in Singapore "very successful".

After the Central Intelligence Agency informed Congress North Korea had built a centrifuge facility, another major step in the nuclear process, Pyongyang formally withdrew from the non-proliferation agreement in January 2003.

"Certainly, South Korea and Japan since North Korea poses a potential existential threat to them and Russian Federation and China as well as they are both immediate neighbors of the North Korea".

Heading into Tuesday's summit, the big competing items on the table came down to what by now are popular acronyms, with the United States seeking the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, or CVID (complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearisation), and the North Korean leadership rejecting unilateral nuclear disarmament while seeking its survival, or CVIG (complete, verifiable, irreversible guarantee of North Korea's security). Exercises will continue with South Korea.

Contrary to Trump's claim that scrapping the exercises would save large amounts of money from the USA defense budget, Stoffer said the savings would be only marginal.

Trump proposes tariff free G7 at summit
Tusk had earlier lamented that the "rules-based global order is being challenged" by current US President Donald Trump . President Donald Trump has opened his second day at an worldwide summit at a breakfast discussion on gender equality.

Although the Pentagon said Defense Secretary Jim Mattis was consulted ahead of time, current and former US defense officials expressed concern at the possibility that the United States would unilaterally halt military exercises without an explicit concession from North Korea lowering the threat from Pyongyang.

U.S. forces in Korea said they had not received updated guidance on military exercises.

Asked about the issue after the meeting, President Trump said he'd been lobbied about the issue even as a presidential candidate. For the most part, experts agreed that Trump made more significant concessions than Kim; that North Korea has committed to denuclearization before and not followed through; and that even a weak agreement is better than war. This led to North Korean condemnation, and Trump briefly cancelling the summit. If President Trump can't take Kim to task for that, then no dictator need worry about American censure.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in spoke by phone with Trump for 20 minutes late on Tuesday, but an official readout of the call made no mention of military exercises.

Trump told reporters he thinks this time is different because his is a new administration.

Many said they welcomed the US and North Korea moving to narrow their differences, but remained cautious and skeptical.

But that brings us to the third point, which is that it's just totally implausible that Trump would want to save money on the military. If you have to have nuclear war to get Trump to fail, I think half of them are OK with that. "I'm very open minded to security agreements and to economic incentives to North Korea, but I am very close-minded when it comes to withdrawing our forces", he said. The conference featured three days of round table discussions with scholars, soldiers, and diplomats, including former U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Christopher Hill and Sue Mi Terry, a former North Korea analyst for the Central Intelligence Agency.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis was not surprised by President Donald Trump's call to end USA military exercises with South Korea and had been consulted beforehand, a Pentagon official said Tuesday.
