New CDC report shows troubling rise in nation's suicide rates

Stories like theirs are becoming less uncommon - research shows suicide rates are rising across the country.

Commenters on Munn's post emphasized the need to talk about suicide and mental health on a larger scale.

Keltz admits the warning signs of someone thinking about committing suicide aren't always easy to see, varying person by person.

Psychiatrist Dr. Gail Saltz told "CBS This Morning: Saturday" that the best way to start a conversation with a loved one or friend you are anxious about is to simply start with, "Can I talk to you".

There are many avenues for treatment, but experts say getting the right help begins with simply asking someone if they are having suicidal thoughts.

CDC researchers examined state-level suicide rate trends between 1999 and 2016 in the "Vital Signs" report released Thursday afternoon, and also analyzed 2015 data covering 27 states from the CDC's National Violent Death Reporting System to study the circumstances of suicide among people with and without known mental health conditions.

Amazon break Sky Sports-BT Sport Premier League duopoly
Throughout the auction period there has been the suggestion that online players would join the bidding for at least one package. The other 180 televised matches will be broadcast by Sky Sports and BT Sport, which have aired the Premier League in the past.

A new report from the Centers for Disease Control shows the suicide rate grew 20 percent faster in Kansas than the national average. Dr. Jeffrey Lieberman, chair of psychiatry at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, says people may act depressed, become withdrawn or disinterested or make ominous comments before a suicide attempt.

"It's preventable; that's the key", said Richard Egan, suicide and training outreach at the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention.

Fans of the chef and journalist are responding to the news with reminders about mental health and mental illness. "Are they going to take the next step?" he said. "Suicide is one of the top 10 causes of death in the U.S. right now, and it's one of three causes that is actually increasing recently, so we do consider it a public health problem-and something that is all around us".

A free, confidential, 24/7 resource for those seeking help is the Colorado Crisis Support Line, at 844-493-8255. And if someone is at immediate risk of harming him or herself, Kaslow says, it's best to seek care from an emergency department or primary care doctor. Her husband said in a statement on Wednesday that she had suffered from depression and anxiety for many years. "If you're really concerned about somebody being suicidal, I don't believe a hotline is enough". Ask for details, she said.

And when a celebrity dies by suicide, it provides a shocking reminder of a bleak and often forgotten reality: People who seem to have it all may be suffering the most.
