Muguruza thrashes Sharapova to reach French Open semi-finals

Maria Sharapova and Garbine Muguruza

After the five-time Grand Slam victor Sharapova lost in the French Open quarterfinals to Garbine Muguruza, she hit back at Williams' accusations and comments about her book.

It will be Halep's second consecutive Grand Slam final after she lost the title match at the Australian Open in January. "At least all the stuff I read and the quotes that I read, which was a little bit disappointing".

The 24-year-old Muguruza holds a 3-1 record over Halep, with the victor of the last-four clash to face either Sloane Stephens or her fellow American Madison Keys in the final.

Halep who will also keep hold of the world number one ranking as a result of the victory, made a flying start and was 5-0 in quick time as Muguruza made some wild errors.

The 2012 and 2014 Paris champion, who missed the 2016 tournament because of a doping ban and a year ago when she was refused a wild card, was broken six times, committed 27 unforced errors and won just five points on her own serve in the second set.

The 10th-seeded Stephens will bid for her second major title when she takes on Halep.

The news was met with cheers in Gaza, where at least 120 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces during recent protests. The ambassador of Palestine in Argentina , Husni Abdel Wahed, had expressed his opposition to the friendly.

Yesterday's matches in Paris saw Simona Halep fight back from the disappointment of losing the first set on a tiebreak against Angelique Kerber to take the next two sets in relatively facile fashion, while our selection, Maria Sharapova, disappointed in the extreme in her defeat to Garbine Muguruza, who created 12 break points and faced just one. She said: "I have more experience now".

"I rushed too much at the beginning", Halep told a news conference. Some of those matches were very defining for me. It will be her first appearance at the All England Club in three years.

Keys made it to the semis with a straight-sets win over Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva while reigning US Open champion Stephens eased past Russia's Daria Kasatkina. And I think we played many matches.

Muguruza had thrashed Maria Sharapova in the quarter-finals but Halep was a different proposition entirely, and it seemed she knew it.

The American pair have contrasting styles, with Stephens' game based on her athleticism and ability to get many balls back, while also turning defence into offence fairly quickly. I just went and searched for her in the training room.

"I have just to stay strong, to try to make her uncomfortable on court and to try to play my game", Halep said.
