Kim Kardashian Thanks Donald Trump for Granting Alice Johnson Clemency

Alice Marie Johnson's life changed on Wednesday - and she has US President Donald Trump and Kim Kardashian West to thank.

A week after issuing his fifth pardon to conservative filmmaker and pundit Dinesh D'Souza, Trump commuted the sentence for Alice Marie Johnson, who has served nearly 22 years in prison for a first-time offense for her role in a multimillion- dollar cocaine operation. "A photo of a reality TV star with no discernible talent, but famous for being famous and a Kardashian", snarked one Twitter user. This use of executive power is taking place against the backdrop of the Russian Federation investigation that hangs over his presidency.

The White House said in a statement that she "has accepted responsibility for her past behavior and has been a model prisoner over the past two decades", working to rehabilitate herself and acting as a mentor to fellow inmates.

"While this Administration will always be very tough on crime, it believes that those who have paid their debt to society and worked hard to better themselves while in prison deserve a second chance", according to a statement from the office of White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Kim also thanked Trump, Kushner and everyone who showed compassion and contributed countless hours.

"I think that she really deserves a second chance at life", Kardashian told news reporters. In a tweet last week, the president said he and Kardashian West talked about "prison reform and sentencing" during their recent visit in the Oval Office of the White House.

She was convicted for facilitating communications in a cocaine trafficking operation in Memphis, Tennessee and was given a life sentence without the possibility of parole. The 1994 indictment describes dozens of deliveries and drug transactions, many involving Johnson. Kardashian West personally advocated for a presidential pardon who, as a first-time offender, was given a mandatory life sentence plus 25 years in 1997 for her role in a cocaine distribution ring.

The U.S. attorney's office in Memphis did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday. The reasons are unclear.

The news was met with cheers in Gaza, where at least 120 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces during recent protests. The ambassador of Palestine in Argentina , Husni Abdel Wahed, had expressed his opposition to the friendly.

"This country's addiction to mass incarceration has devastated millions of families like Alice's, with emotional and economic consequences that can last generations", she added.

"What is the goal of putting a lady with no prior criminal record, on a nonviolent drug offense, in jail for her entire life?" he said in a telephone interview. Her warden, case manager, and vocational training instructor have all written letters in support of her clemency.

Trump's decision, his latest inspired by a celebrity champion, comes amid a flurry of recent pardons issued by the president. "He takes them seriously because they impact people's lives". "I'm a broken woman".

Kim Kardashian West met US President Donald Trump at the White House on 30 May 2018 to discuss prison reform.

Her co-defendants who testified against her at the time received sentences ranging from probation to 10 years, while Johnson received life with parole plus 25 years.

During a call with MSNBC on Wednesday, Tretessa, Johnson's daughter, said she found out about Trump commuting her mother's sentence on the television and her lawyer called shortly after she saw the news. He pardoned right-wing pundit Dinesh D'Souza and pardoned former Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Administration officials say the president is not only contemplating possible pardons - which wipes out a conviction - but also commutations, which leave the conviction intact and on the person's record while reducing the punishment. He says he's considering a long list of other clemency actions, including former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who is serving 14 years in prison for corruption, and celebrity homemaker Martha Stewart, who served about five months on charges connected to an insider trading case.

The federal prosecutor who oversaw Stewart's case in NY was James Comey, one of Trump's principal antagonists who was sacked by the president a year ago as FBI director.
