Facebook bug made millions of users' default settings public

Facebook has another apology for you

Facebook announced today that a software glitch mistakenly made 14 million users' posts public over a period of 10 days in May, even if the users had intended those posts to be private.

Spotted by Recode, posts from up to 14 million Facebook users that had their content set to be shared privately was changed to be publicly seen.

It occurred when Facebook was testing a new feature and meant that it accidentally changed a user's privacy settings to public from whatever it was previously, making potentially sensitive status updates viewable from anywhere in the world.

The bug affected as many as 14 million people, the company said.

Erin Egan, Facebook's chief privacy officer, said this did not affect past posts.

'We'd like to apologize for this mistake, ' she added.

Those affected by this latest issue will receive notifications from Facebook starting Thursday.
