Rajinikanth Kaala

Enthusiasm was seen among Rajinikanth's fans in Mumbai who queued up in large numbers outside a movie theatre to watch "Kaala". The Kollywood movie has been released in over 500 screens across the state, while the worldwide screen count is said to be above 2,500.

Almost after two years, superstar Rajinikanth is back to the silver screen with his latest release "Kaala".

Directed by Pa Ranjith, "Kaala" is a tipped to be gangster drama, which is said to have a strong political message.

Also, in the wake of the protest, the screening of the movie has been stalled in Orion mall in Malleswaram, Garuda and Lido malls in Bengaluru central district.

Earlier, the Karnataka high court instructed the producers of the film, Wunderbar Films, to make a list of theatres where the film would be screened in the state so that adequate police protection could be ensured.

Pro-Kannada workers protest outside Balaji theatre in Bengaluru where Rajinikanth's movie Kaala is screening, on June 7, 2018. However, most single screen theatres did not play the movie.

As the admirers celebrated the release of the much-awaited film by dancing to the beat of the drums, the skies too opened up to match the footsteps of Rajini lovers. "But we hope they have a great story to be shared, which may be liked - and the film does well", he is quoted as saying.

Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy had requested the distributor of "Kaala" not to release it in "this kind of atmosphere", but said his government would follow the high court order on the issue. The film is facing a "ban" in the state over Rajinikanth's remarks on the controversial issue of sharing of Cauvery river water between the neighbouring states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

The state government's decision to grant permission for special shows for the first two days have also turned out to be a boon for the Rajinikanth-starrer.
