Sharapova hits back at Serena 'book 100 percent hearsay' claim

Angelique Kerber

Simona Halep fought back from a set down against two-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber to book her spot in the semi-finals of the French Open and set up a shootout with Garbine Muguruza for the world No. 1 spot.

Former number one Muguruza takes on current incumbent Halep on Thursday with the victor to be assured of the top ranking as well as a place in the Roland Garros final.

"I mean, it's not that important, because it's constantly this thing going on, you know. since past year", she said after a crushing 6-2, 6-1 last-eight victory over Maria Sharapova in Paris. She broke again in the eighth game to seal the match.

Now third in the WTA leaderboard behind Halep and Caroline Wozniacki, Muguruza will rise above them both to sit atop of the rankings with a win on Thursday. In Open Era, No.1 seed has claimed the Roland Garros title on 18 occasions and finished runner-up 13 times. Muguruza, who won the French Open in 2016 but didn't make it out of sectionals a year ago, is continuing a fantastic run of tennis at Roland-Garros. Like Sharapova, Halep was erratic early, making 30 unforced errors in the first set.

"It's always a tough match when I play against her". Like, before, I gave it a lot of importance so that's why you're fighting every week, and I got there. Halep also won their most recent battle at the Australian Open where she saved match points to win 9-7 in the third set of their semi-final.

She needed only 70 minutes to eliminate Sharapova and dominated her with superb returning, breaking the former No. 1 a half-dozen times.

But without adequate transportation to get crude to the coasts, "we're going to continue to see some weakness in WTI", he said. Brent recovered later in the week, however, when a Gulf source flagged that any rise in production would be gradual.

Williams withdrew shortly before the match with a pectoral muscle injury, a moment Sharapova said she found briefly startling but not destabilizing.

Despite her first loss to Muguruza in their fourth meeting, committing 27 unforced errors and getting broken six times, Sharapova said she saw signs of hope in her form as she builds towards Wimbledon next month.

Garbine Muguruza and Simona Halep meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis French Open.

She is 48-2 in majors after winning the opening set. She went on to commit only 16 errors over the course of the next two, which was the difference in getting the win. Halep is 3-2 in career grand slam semifinal matches.

Kerber got off to a flying start.
