Stephen Colbert mocks Trump for claim he could pardon himself

Rudy Giuliani: President Trump could pardon himself, but he probably wouldn’t

Mr Giuliani added Mr Trump "has no intention of pardoning himself", but the U.S. constitution, which gives a president the authority to issue pardons, "doesn't say he can't".

The President then called Robert Mueller's investigation "UNCONSTITUTIONAL" but said he would "play the game" because he has "done nothing wrong". "I think if the President decided he was going to pardon himself, I think that's nearly self-executing impeachment", he told CNN.

"I don't recommend that this president or any subsequent president avail him or herself of this power". Wagner is a national reporter who leads The Post's new breaking political news team.

But Trump's tweet, whether accurate or not, did give other Twitter users the idea of invoking legal scholars in other matters.

Mr Giuliani said "when you're interfering with the president, you're interfering with the country" and suggested the Mueller investigation already was affecting the president's important work, including a planned 12 June summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. "I don't recommend it", Lee concluded.

In response to questions about Trump's tweet on Monday, Sarah Huckabee Sanders said: "Thankfully, the president hasn't done anything wrong and wouldn't need one". "If four of them are completely innocent and one of them is your assumption that it's a guilty motive, which (Trump) would deny, you can't possibly prosecute him".

Mr Giuliani - a former New York City mayor - also said the president had not yet decided whether to sit for an interview with Mr Mueller, but that his legal team were leaning towards advising him not to. And on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on Monday night, the ABC host asked his viewers to "imagine how Donald Trump would have reacted if Obama said he had the right to pardon himself".

Constitutional scholars are divided on whether a president can pardon himself.

Giuseppe Conte to lead coalition gov't as Italy's Prime Minister-designate
Lorne Cook and Raf Casert contributed from Brussels, and Angela Charlton from Paris. The euro has been Italy's currency since 2002, when it replaced the Italian lira.

"I would think the presidential power, there's nothing that limits the presidential power of pardon from a federal crime, not a state crime", he said.

A Boston Globe report published last month says Trump isn't the author of all his tweets.

Last week he pardoned Dinesh D'Souza, a conservative pundit convicted of campaign finance crimes, and a year ago he pardoned former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, who campaigned for Trump before being convicted in a case regarding racial profiling.

Trump claimed that he has accomplished more than any other presidents in the first 500 days in office.

'The basic argument on the side that says he can do it is, look at the Constitution and it doesn't say he can't.

Mr Mueller, whose investigation already has led to criminal charges against Trump campaign aides including former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, is also looking into whether Mr Trump unlawfully sought to obstruct the Russian Federation investigation.

In a warning, it also claimed he had the power, "if he wished, to terminate the inquiry, or even exercise his power to pardon if he so desired.".
