Furore over 'disgusting' kiss by Philippines' Duterte

Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte sparks outrage by kissing woman on stage in South Korea

The conservative newspaper Chosun Ilbo noted that South Korea's government indicated Duterte's visit is strictly business and sent the head of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration instead of a senior diplomat to welcome the Philippines president at the airport to send a clear message to that effect. "It was a despicable display of sexism and grave abuse of authority", she said in a comment to local media.

President Rodrigo Duterte sought a kiss from the woman after he called her on stage to give her a copy of a book at a town hall-style meeting with Filipino workers Sunday in Seoul.

Duterte first asked one of the women if she was single, to which she replied, "No, sir".

In February this year, Human rights groups condemned Duterte for saying his troops should shoot female communist rebels in the genitals to render them "useless", which they said could encourage sexual violence and war crimes. "But you can tell him that this is just a joke?". The footage didn't actually show the kiss, as the camera moved away from the stage just as the president approached the woman, and focused on the audience's reaction-mostly smiles and cheers.

He leaned in and kissed her on the mouth.

But the women's rights political party Gabriela in a statement denounced Duterte for his "perverted way of getting back at his women critics".

The 73-year-old Duterte, who is leading a violent crackdown against illegal drugs in his country, has come under fire for sexist remarks before.

Trump Receives North Korean Envoy in Historic White House Visit
He and Pompeo shook hands shortly after 9:00 am (1300 GMT) and began their talks over breakfast, with four people on each side. The upcoming meeting between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader will be the first of its kind.

The woman, who was identified as Bea Kim by the Philippine News Agency and has two daughters, said there was "no malice" in the kiss and that it didn't mean anything "except to entertain and make other Filipinos in the gathering happy".

As CBS News partner BBC News reports, Duterte has sparked outrage with previous comments seen as misogynistic.

Despite a string of accusations of misogyny against the president, he remains popular both in the Philippines and with Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW).

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was welcomed in Seoul and received investment pledges from the South Korean government during his first summit in Seoul with President Moon Jae-in.

"Don't take it seriously".

"His repeated acts of machismo are meant as entertainment to hide the reality of his rapidly slipping popularity due to the issues of extrajudicial killings, the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion law and big-time corruption scandals now plaguing his rule", Gabriela said in a statement on Monday. "I was angry because she was raped". In exchange, he repeatedly requested that she kiss him, pointing to his lips. "But she was so handsome, the mayor should have been first, what a waste".
