App Store Just Turned 10: Fun Facts, Figures From App Annie

Russian Telecom Watchdog Gives Apple One Month to Respond to Request to Remove Telegram from App Store

Secure messaging app Telegram has gone without iOS updates since mid-April, CEO Pavel Durov has claimed, accusing Apple of blocking updates globally for more than a month.

The version of the app now in the App Store is two months old, and Durov claims features such as stickers will not work properly in iOS 11.4 (which was pushed out earlier this week) due to the lack of updates.

According to Durov, the problem began when Russian Federation ordered Apple to remove Telegram from the App Store. It usually takes around a week for Apple to either approve an app or give some indication as to why it has been rejected. "Because Apple, like other transnational companies, is a company with a high degree of red tape, we expect the reply within a month", RKN's head Alexander Zharov said to Russian news agency Interfax.

"Unfortunately, Apple didn't side with us", he continued. Back in April he was thanking the Jesus phone-flinger (along with Google, Amazon and Microsoft) "for not taking part in political censorship".

Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Some of the features of MIUI 10 include a revamped task manager, gesture controls and AI portrait mode for enhanced Bokeh shots. The Mi 8 Explorer Edition also comes with a pressure-sensitive in-display fingerprint scanner.

For now, Telegram is still in the App Store, albeit with an out-of-date, non-GDPR-compliant version of the app.

However, Telegram's Durov now says, the issue goes beyond just Russian users of the app. He said that had meant Telegram was also unable to fully comply with new privacy rules put in place in the European Union last week. The allegation comes after Russian Federation demanded a ban on Telegram in April, when the app-maker refused to hand over the keys to its encrypted chats.

Its hopping had the unintended effect of RKN knocking out entire swathes of IP addresses to stop Telegram, some 19 million at its peak, causing a number of other services to go down as well.

But Telegram has 200 million global users, and is ranked as the world's ninth most popular mobile messaging service. Earlier this week, speaking to local newspapers, director of Roskomnadzor (Russia's Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media) said that the country has asked Apple to help Russia block Telegram. But it seems the impact of those demands is being felt worldwide.
