Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed surprised and proud after comprehensive Lord’s test win

Pakistan thrash England to win first Test

The out-of-form Mark Stoneman (5) trudged back from potentially his last England knock when an ugly 45-ball innings was ended by Shadab, who had the opener pinned on his back foot and took out off stump.

England on Sunday resumed their second innings at 235-6 on the fourth day of the first Test against Pakistan at the famous Lords ground.

England captain Joe Root admitted his team had been comprehensively outplayed by an inexperienced Pakistan side in their nine-wicket loss to the tourists in the first test at Lord's.

It was one example of the team's much sharper performance after their shoddy display during this month's five-wicket win over Test debutants Ireland in Dublin, with Sarfraz saying it was a "credit" to the work of Pakistan fielding coach Steve Rixon, the former Australia wicket-keeper.

It's hard to argue that the latest Test match defeat will be something the England squad and fans alike want to forget about and put behind them instantly. "We continually deliver that type of message and are continually working on it in the nets".

"Is playing on (county) wickets where you re not going to bat for too long, before you get one that does a heap, is that necessarily good in the long term for learning how to concentrate for long periods?", asked Bayliss. "We can do that next week and we must take that chance".

Maryland community 'heartbroken' after second flood in two years
A small window of time to survey losses and gather belongings will be given to those in the flood damaged areas, officials say. Kittleman said the missing man was in his 40s and was not a resident of the historic district.

Stoneman and Alastair Cook are, statistically, England's worst opening partnership, the duo averaging just 18.75 for the first wicket - the lowest average of any of the 16 England opening pairs that have batted together on at least 20 occasions.

"(This) was nowhere near good enough for Test level...to be bowled out for 180 and 240 is simply not good enough.

The Australian, rarely given to venting his frustration in public, added: "In a way, you nearly throw your hands up sometimes".

Root is the most talented batsman in the England side, but a point that is held against him when his record is compared to that of India's Virat Kohli or New Zealand's Kane Williamson is his conversion rate of fifties to hundred. "The other thing we need is some putting pressure on from the outside and making plenty of runs and that's not necessarily happening either".

"We were well below par and always chasing the game really, trying to find a way back in".

Perhaps the only consolation for a beleaguered Joe Root after this chastening defeat, which didn't even make it to the end of the first session on Day Four, is that this team is running out of ways in which things could possibly get worse.
