WH lawyer attends DOJ briefings with lawmakers on confidential source

Trump ‘hereby demands' the Justice Department investigate his conspiracy theories. That's not how it works

Critics, including top congressional Democrats, argue that Republicans want to use the information to undercut the Russian Federation investigation, which is now being led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

In this latest case, we learned that in 2016, the FBI opened a counterintelligence investigation when it discovered that people associated with the Russian government had made contact with Trump campaign officials.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller departs after a closed-door meeting with members of the Senate Judiciary Committee about Russian meddling in the election and possible connection to the Trump campaign, at the Capitol in Washington, June 21, 2017.

Trump claimed ex-DNI James Clapper "admitted", the intelligence community "was spying on my campaign", a false statement that twisted Clapper's recent comments about the FBI's actions and the repeat of an unproven claim by the president. Only 44 percent said they think the investigation is justified. "So what they're calling an informant, the Republicans are calling a spy... they're talking about the same thing".

Soon it was made public that Schiff would be allowed to attend the first briefing - meaning both gatherings would be bipartisan.

It's still not clear whether the pair of meetings -- which became chaotic affairs over repeated changes to the invite list, time and place of the classified briefings -- would satisfy House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes, who has threatened to hold Deputy Attorney Rod Rosenstein in contempt of Congress for not providing the documents he's seeking related to the confidential source. The president intensified his attacks this week, calling it "spygate" and tweeting Thursday that it was "Starting to look like one of the biggest political scandals in USA history".

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said Flood and Kelly "were there to relay the President's desire for as much openness as possible under the law; and both left - as planned-before the substantive portion of the meeting began".

Facts matter. The FBI's use of Confidential Human Sources (the actual term) is tightly regulated and essential to protecting the country. Trump will stick with it for a while - unless something else pops up that might be a more effective foil for him or a better way to undercut the legitimacy of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

It should be called the CR7 Champions League says Ronaldo
Three in a row, Zidane absolutely got it spot on, and you wouldn't bet against a fourth next year either. It fuelled discussion over Bale's future and his relationship with Zidane.

House Intelligence Committee ranking Democrat Adam Schiff said Flood's involvement was "entirely improper".

Stop waiting for the constitutional crisis that President Donald Trump is sure to provoke. But the tweet had enough heft on its own to shape the lives of transgender servicemembers or would-be recruits in the month between when the president hit "send" on Twitter and when the White House issued a memorandum to the Defense Department. Trump tweeted earlier this week.

Mueller's lawyers had redacted information from two affidavits used to get search warrants in the Manafort investigation.

Trump's firing of Comey has spawned an investigation into whether he obstructed justice by removing the head of the FBI as it investigated his campaign. They may be newsworthy in that they show what the regime would like people to believe, but we don't assume that they have any relationship to actual facts.

Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, said "there's never been a Gang of 8 meeting with a White House presence".

Clapper says Trump has set a "new low bar" for ethics and morality and has caused "societal damage" that will take years to fix. Trump has routinely broken norms about how the White House interacts with the Justice Department, which is supposed to have a degree of independence.

Trump has been claiming since his early days as president that he was spied upon by President Barack Obama's administration.
