USA and North Korea preparing Trump-Kim summit

Kim Jong-un committed to complete denuclearisation, says Moon Jae-in after North-South 'surprise' summit

North and South Korean leaders held the surprise second summit after U.S. President Donald Trump cancelled the meeting with Kim Jong-un scheduled for June 12.

But North Korea's propaganda took a very aggressive line with the United States since Wednesday, threatening nuclear war and bashing Vice President Mike Pence. Mr Trump said things were "moving along very nicely".

However, separately on Saturday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders revealed that a team of U.S. officials was being dispatched to Singapore for summit preparations.

Speaking to reporters after a press conference on a U.S. man freed from a Venezuelan prison, he said they were doing "very well" in terms of the summit with North Korea.

A TV screen shows South Korean President Moon Jae-in, left, meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the border village of Panmunjom during a news program at the Seoul Railway Station in Seoul, South Korea, May 26, 2018.

"I conveyed President Trump's firm resolve to end hostile relations and provide economic cooperation if Chairman Kim brings about complete denuclearization", Moon said, adding that he briefed Kim Jong-un on his meeting with US President Donald Trump.

President Moon also emphasized that North Korea demonstrated "its strong intentions" by unilaterally suspending nuclear and missile tests since November of a year ago and demolishing the Punggye-ri nuclear test site last week.

Trump has said Kim would be both secure in his rule and rich, as the USA and other countries would offer substantial economic aid and investment.

Moon made the remarks after a surprise meeting between the two Korean leaders on Saturday at the Demilitarized Zone.

Vettel happy racing alongside Raikonnen at Ferrari
This was the case previous year , but the balance has shifted this season with the introduction of a softer range of tyres. A fan who was listening in shouted: "Most boring race ever". "Thank you!" came the heartfelt response from the German.

But within 24 hours he reversed course, saying it could still go ahead after productive talks were held with North Korean officials.

Trump rattled the region on Thursday by cancelling his meeting with Kim, citing "open hostility" from Pyongyang. In an apparent reference to this move, Moon said USA and North Korean working-level officials would be discussing the agenda of the summit. Kim agreed, Moon said.

The Trump administration has sought to convince allies that any weakening of sanctions pressure would harm diplomatic prospects for resolving the crisis and increase chances for military options to address North Korea's pursuit of a nuclear missile capable of striking the continental United States. "I urge North Korea and the U.S.to confirm each other's will by sharing their problems with each other and communicating directly".

Saturday's summit marks the fourth meeting between the leaders of the two Koreas since they were divided at the end of the World War II in 1945.

He also said that high-level inter-Korean talks would take place on June 1.

"In contrast (to Kim's concerns) President Trump stated clearly not only that hostile relations will end, but the intent to help (North Korea's) economic development if North Korea denuclearizes", Moon said.

While China would nearly certainly block any US attempt to win passage of more U.N. sanctions, the United States still has at its disposal further unilateral measures such as imposing its own new sanctions on North Korean officials and entities or additional Chinese companies that do business with Pyongyang.

Mr. Moon is the only South Korean leader to have met a North Korean leader twice, both times in the DMZ, which is a symbol of the unending hostilities between the nations after the Korean War ended in 1953 in a truce, not a peace treaty.
