Hardest-hit Kentucky counties to receive more hepatitis A vaccines

Hepatitis A Outbreak hits Kentucky

Because of the high incidence of drug use reported in West Virginia and among the food industry, this is a proactive measure to vaccinate a high-risk group in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines. But this year the Barren River District Health Department says the Commonwealth has seen more than 500 cases of the disease in just the past nine months alone.

Statewide, there have been 106 confirmed, probable, and suspected cases of Hepatitis A. The illness caused by this virus can be prevented with a vaccination, of either the hepatitis A or immune globulin shot. It is spread when a person ingests the virus from objects, food, or drinks contaminated by small, undetected amounts of stool from an infected person.

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, Bureau for Public Health has announced the state's first death associated with the hepatitis A outbreak that is occurring nationally. Most of the cases in the hepatitis A outbreak that has plagued West Virginia have occurred in those counties.

In light of the recent, large-scale Hepatitis A exposure in the San Francisco Bay Area, food safety attorneys of the Seattle-based law firm of Marler Clark, are asking restaurants and food manufacturers to voluntarily vaccinate all workers against Hepatitis A.

Venezuela throws out U.S. diplomats for "conspiracies"
Maduro promised to present "evidence" that both diplomats were engaged in a political, military and economic "conspiracy". President Trump signed a new order which prevents American companies from buying debt from Venezuela .

The number of Hepatitis A cases in Kentucky has exploded this year, increasing from approximately 20 reported cases to 629 cases already reported this year.

The acting commissioner for the Department for Public Health, Dr. Jeffrey Howard, said Thursday that 10 counties will receive funding to purchase the vaccines. The counties are Boyd, Bullitt, Carter, Greenup, Hardin, Jefferson, McCracken, Meade, Montgomery and Warren. "We hope to have a lot more people", said John Law, public information specialist for the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department.

Children are routinely recommended for the hepatitis A vaccine beginning at age 1. Persons unsure whether they need the vaccine should contact their local health department or medical professional.
