Heavy rain, flooding expected in South Florida over Memorial Day Weekend

Path of Subtropical Storm Alberto as of Saturday

The storm is moving north-northeast at 13 miles per hour with winds at 40 miles per hour.

Al Sandrick, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, has said this week that residents of Marion and Alachua counties should not be focused on the storm's name or status; rather, they should be mindful that the storm will have rain impacts far outside the National Hurricane Center's projected path.

Meanwhile, officials along the Gulf Coast launched emergency preparations Saturday as Alberto pounded Cuba's western coast, raising the threat of flash floods and mudslides. These are the locations most likely to feel tropical storm force winds over 40mph. But the broad storm system is expected to bring heavy rains across the entire northern Gulf Coast starting well before landfall.

A tropical storm watch is now in place from the New Orleans area to the Aucilla River in the Florida panhandle.

The latest advisory from AlabamaWx.com has a Tropical Storm Warning issued for the west coast of the Florida peninsula from Bonita Beach to the Anclote River and for the northern Gulf Coast from the Aucilla River westward to the Mississippi/Alabama border.

Through all of this, expect rain of half a footto a foot along the coast, to 4 to 8 inches for inland counties.

The National Hurricane Center on Saturday issued a tropical storm warning for Alabama's coast, saying tropical storm conditions are possible there by early Monday. Southern Mississippi will have a better chance of seeing heavy rain, but the heaviest amounts should be east of the area.

Rip Currents: Moderate risk today and high risk Sunday and Monday as onshore winds and seas increase.

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts. Only.13 inches had fallen at the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport through 5 p.m. Saturday, but almost 6 inches has fallen so far this month, about three times the normal amount.

The rain that swept through the area late Saturday afternoon technically was not related to Alberto, according to the National Weather Service in Mobile, Alabama.

Wind shear and dry air is still plaguing Alberto, but are expected to slacken Sunday giving the storm a chance to strengthen. "Showers and squalls will contain heavy rain and occasional lightning with gusty, possibly damaging winds".
