Amidst Uncertainties, US-North Korea Singapore Meeting Not Canceled

Kim Jong-Un, Moon Jae-In Discuss U.S.Summit At Saturday Meeting

The meeting inside the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) dividing the two nations comes a day after the United States president said his summit with Pyongyangcould still go ahead.

In April, North Korea's Kim Jong-un and South Korea's Moon Jae-in held a historic summit agreeing to take measures to support worldwide efforts aimed at denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and proceed with reunion programs for the countries.

Trump scrapped the meeting in a letter to Kim on Thursday after repeated threats by North Korea to pull out over what it saw as confrontational remarks by U.S. officials demanding unilateral disarmament.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae In came together on Saturday for a previously unannounced meeting at the "truce village" of Panmunjom, which lies in the heavily guarded demilitarised zone. It was the sequel to a previous, groundbreaking summit in April between the two, during which Kim became the first North Korean leader to set foot in South Korea since the war.

The last time two weeks ago that a White House delegation traveled in advance of the planned summit they were stood up by their North Korean counterparts.

Also on Friday US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke by telephone with his South Korean counterpart, Kang Kyung Wha, in which he said Washington still wished to have dialogue with Pyongyang.

South Korea, a longtime US ally, was not notified ahead of time before Trump's letter canceling with Kim was made public.

North Korea has been subjected to numerous rounds of worldwide sanctions since 2006, which has cut off most of its exports and capped its imports of oil.

Presidential spokesman Yoon Young-chan said Moon would reveal more details about the outcome of the meeting on Sunday morning.

Moon said he wished to hold a three-way summit with Trump and Kim should their upcoming bilateral summit succeed.

The KCNA statement said Kim and Moon agreed to hold high-level talks between their two nations on June 1, and to take steps to quickly implement their efforts to denuclearise the peninsula.

On Friday, on his way to give the commencement address at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, Mr. Trump said the summit with North Korea "could even be the 12th", after canceling the summit the day before.

South Korea's president Moon Jae-in calling Thursday's move "very regrettable" and China, the North's top patron, saying the summit was vital to ensure security on the Korean Peninsula...

"They very much want to do it; we'd like to do it", he said.

Kim and Moon ended the meeting in an embrace. "We're going to see what happens".

Trump subsequently wrote on Twitter that the two countries were having "very productive talks" and added that if the summit happens, it will likely still be in Singapore on the initially scheduled date, and could be extended if necessary.
