NFL restores respect for national anthem

Trump Says That NFL Players Who Kneel “Shouldn't Be In The Country”

On Thursday, perhaps the biggest documented anti-anthem protester, President Trump, weighed in on the NFL's revised policy.

Trump has been critical of the protests since they began during the 2016 preseason, when then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick raised eyebrows - and some rankles - by taking a knee during the pregame playing of "The Star-Spangled Banner".

"I don't think people should be staying in locker rooms, but still I think it's good", he told Fox & Friends' Brian Kilmeade.

"I think that's good", said Trump when asked about his feelings on the new policy.

The new policy, announced after a two-day meeting of the league's 32 owners, leaves it to individual teams to discipline players for acts deemed disrespectful during the anthem but also gives the league wide discretion to fine teams for actions taken by players.

"The policy adopted today was approved in concert with the NFL's ongoing commitment to local communities and our country - one that is extraordinary in its scope, resources, and alignment with our players". There is no requirement that players be on the field during the national anthem.

Team Kaepernick strikes back at Pence over his support for NFL kneeling ban

"I think the people pushed it forward", he said. Teams will be fined if their players disobey the new rules.

- Robert Klemko (@RobertKlemko) May 23, 2018The league on Wednesday unveiled a new policy aimed at outlawing kneeling during the national anthem at games. "I think [the new policy] is all about eliminating distractions for the team and for the audience". Trump denounced the players as unpatriotic and repeatedly demanded an end to such protests.

"Pence, who left an Indianapolis Colts game after players kneeled past year, posted a screenshot of the news and captioned it "#winning" on Twitter.

The NFL Player's Association, which has supported the players' right to protest, issued a release on Wednesday stating it would review the new rule and challenge any aspect inconsistent with its collective bargaining agreement.

The decision was applauded by the Trump administration. Roger Goodell, the N.F.L. commissioner, and the league's owners are evidently so insecure about their own patriotism that they have felt the need to bully their employees into a ritual sign of respect.

"Wouldn't you love to see one of these National Football League owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, you'd say, 'Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out!"
