American Legion to host Memorial Day ceremony

Soldiers arrive to plant flags at Arlington National

Monroe Township Memorial Day Celebration: 10 a.m. This year's ceremony will honor the Operation Iraq Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom veterans.

The Sussex American Legion Post 213 will hold its annual services on Monday, May 28, at the following locations: Woodbourne Park, 8:30 a.m.; Beemerville, 9 a.m.; Sussex Middle School, 9:30 a.m.; Sussex Fire House, 10 a.m.; Deckertown, 10:30 a.m.; Fairview, 11 a.m.; and Clove, 11:30 a.m. A ceremony will be held at noon at Cedar Ridge Cemetery with the parade to follow.

This annual event honors all veterans for their dedication, their service and their sacrifices.

A short lunch will follow at the American Legion post at noon.

"This Memorial Day, on which we decorate their graves with the tokens of love and affection, is no idle ceremony with us, to pass away an hour; but it brings back to our minds in all their vividness the fearful conflicts of that awful war in which they fell as victims". The Rev. Kenny Leonard will be the speaker. The event is open to the public. The service will feature readings and music, and Ensign Donald "Sam" Alexander will speak.

The Memorial Day Run and March will be held at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on Saturday.

At 10:00 a.m., the Aurora Legion and Auxiliary will honor all veterans who have served our country. Mass at St. Lawrence Church, Penfield. May 25 and 27, Windridge Memorial Park, 7014 S. Rawson Bridge Road, Cary. John Pigg of Danville, a Patriot Guard Rider and American Legion Rider, will give the main address.

Newville's Memorial Day Parade and Services: 1 p.m. There will be a short service at 9:30 the Lisk Cemetery in rural Thawville. Refreshments will be served following the ceremony. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and traverse Grand Ave. with veterans, service groups, horses and lots of patriotism. Parade will continue down Algonquin Road to South River Road and head straight to the baseball diamond at Lions Park for a program to honor our departed veterans. The speaker will be the Rev. Silas Montgomery of the Christian Bible Church of Cissna Park. Hosted by the American Legion, Eugene Drill Post 606. The parade will last approximately two hours and will feature military units, bands, floats and antique auto clubs.

11 a.m. - Parade, from the post office in the village to Amesbury Cemetery, Pleasant Street.

May 28: East Greenwich Memorial Day Parade begins at 10am, kicking off from Academy Field the Hill District by way of Mawney Street, continuing to First Avenue (Rt.401) for a brief wreath-laying ceremony at the World War II Memorial on Cliff St., then proceeds north on Main St. for closing ceremonies at Town Hall at 11am.

At 11:30 a.m., there will be an open house for all veterans and their families at the new Veterans Center at 311 N. Second St., Unit 109, in St. Charles. The guest speaker will be the Rev. Rachel Stockle of the Loda United Methodist Church.

The staff of the East Hampton Library's Long Island Collection has reminded the community that it is a valuable resource for anyone looking to locate and decorate gravesites of local veterans. They will be listed by the wars they fought in.
