Russian Federation has been a key ally of Assad throughout the seven-year Syrian civil war when many other countries, including the United Kingdom, wanted to remove him from power.

Putin also congratulated Assad on the "successes of the Syrian government's army in the fight against terrorist groups".

Russia, Iran and Turkey have been attempting to resolve the conflict in the talks that started previous year - in competition with a US- and UN-backed Geneva initiative. "I have always said, and now I repeat once again, that we always enthusiastically support the political process, which should go hand in hand with the fight against terrorism", Assad said.

In keeping with a Kremlin assertion, Assad mentioned "stability is bettering" in Syria, "opening the door to the political course of we began a while in the past". "But with you and other partners and friends, we will continue to make strong progress in the peace process", Mr Assad was quoted as saying in the statement.
