Two unseen pages of Anne Frank's diary released

Researchers unravel content of unknown pages of diary of Anne Frank

The Anne Frank House Museum said the Jewish teenager appears to have covered up the pages with brown masking paper because she anxious that other people in her hideout would read them.

In an effort to save pages of her precious diary that had been "spoiled", Anne made a decision to use some of the space to jot down risque jokes she may have heard from her father or on the radio, the Anne Frank House said.

Frank van Vree, director of the Netherlands Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, said in a statement: "Anyone who reads the passages that have now been discovered will be unable to suppress a smile".

The Anne Frank House - a museum located at the building where Anne and her family hid - stresses these passages are "not exceptional" in Anne's writing, noting that she also wrote openly about sexual subjects elsewhere.

The story is set in 1942 when a 13-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their Amsterdam home and went into hiding following the Nazis' occupation of Holland.

"As mattresses for the soldiers", she answered. She mentions there were houses in Paris ― which she says her father once saw ― where one could go to find prostitutes. The texts that have now been revealed are included in the academic research into the diaries of Anne Frank and her development as a writer that the Anne Frank House has been carrying out together with the Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands since 2010. "Papa has been there".

The pages, dated to Sept 28, 1942, were contained in the red-and-white chequered diary Anne had received for her birthday in June of that year, shortly before they went into hiding. "They bring us even closer to the girl and the writer Anne Frank".

While she hoped to publish the book after the war, and completed 215 loose pages in two months, in August 1944 she and her family were discovered, arrested and deported. From these jokes Anne moves on to the subject of sex education, which she pretends she has to give to someone else.

After the war, her father succeeded in getting an edited version of her diary published, which has since become one of the most read books in the world and one of the first accounts of the Holocaust many Americans read. And, as researchers have noted, she explored the topics of sex and sexuality on other, non-hidden pages as well.

Included on the pages were dirty jokes and writings about sex, libidos and periods.

The museum, which houses the diary on permanent loan, said it was unclear why Anne covered up the pages.

The house where the Franks hid has been turned into museum, making it one of Amsterdam's most visited attractions.
