Boris Johnson will discuss moves to protect European countries working in Iran

Macron and Merkel in Aachen Germany

President Hassan Rouhani said he had asked Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to negotiate with European countries, China and Russian Federation in the coming weeks.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Beijing on Sunday.

However, European leaders did not really do much to salvage the deal beyond trying to coax Trump into remaining in it, or - worse yet from an Iranian point of view - appeasing Washington at Tehran's expense.

Re "Trump withdraws USA from Iran nuclear deal" (May 8): The time has come for Americans to speak up.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the United States was withdrawing from a 2015 deal negotiated by the Obama administration.

Calling the accord as an "embarrassment" that was "defective at its core", Trump also warned of severe consequences if Iran resumes its nuclear programme.

The pair will be joined by German foreign minister Heiko Maas and European Union high representative Federica Mogherini for Tuesday's talks in Brussels, where they are also expected to meet Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Ms Mogherini said "the aim" is to see how Iran and the Europeans "can co-ordinate actions" in order to preserve the deal.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, speaking in Dublin, declared: "We are stakeholders" and will remain so.

They might help shield European businesses from U.S. penalties but have never been used. "Its ballistic missile program, which continued essentially unchecked, was proof that what they were seeking was delivery systems for the nuclear weapons", Bolton told CNN.

This, along with its diplomatic moves to orchestrate an end to the Syrian conflict, has put Moscow at loggerheads with the USA and Europe, which have intervened against the regime.

Javad Zarif, who has remained Iran's top diplomat since negotiating the deal during two years of talks, spoke to an global audience in a YouTube video.

"We hope recent events will lead us not to trust in the West and even Europeans", he said on Sunday, according to the conservative-linked Fars news agency.

During the call, Rouhani said the United States decision to withdraw from the deal was "unlawful" and "irresponsible".

"For the first time, Iran has the chance to show the world they are not the rogue nation they are always presented as, that they negotiated in good faith and keep to their commitments", said Karim Emile Bitar of the Institute for worldwide and Strategic Studies in Paris.

If the discussions between Iran and the other parties to the deal aren't fruitful, Iran will be back on the path to becoming a nuclear power.

Unfortunately, President Trump has put us on a very different, more risky path.

Iranian military spending "increased alongside overall government spending -- not in a silo on its own", the newspaper goes on to say, adding that "the nuclear accord has contributed to the overall increase in spending - including the increase in military spending - since it lifted sanctions and allowed for a rise in oil production and exports".
