Indonesian terror attacks highlight an often forgotten truth

Three families behind ISIS-inspired bombings in Indonesia's Surabaya

On Sunday, May 13, a wave of suicide bombings in the Indonesian city of Surabaya [VIDEO] was carried out by three radicalized Islamic families.

A Surabaya police spokesman said police arrested 13 suspects over the two suicide bombings carried out by two families, after conducting raids in Surabaya and its neighbouring cities of Malang and Pasuruan.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack via its Aamag news agency, but earlier Reuters quoted the communications director of Indonesia's intelligence service, Wawan Purwanto, as saying the agency believes it was the work of the ISIS-affiliated Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD).

Police reportedly said the second and third church attacks came five minutes apart.

National Police chief Tito Karnavian said: "We have identified the bombers".

"I think the family setting and the isolation from the outside world ... were flawless settings for him to indoctrinate the rest of his family", said Alexander Raymond Arifianto, an Indonesia expert at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. The attack by the al-Qaida-linked group Jemaah Islamiyah left 202 people dead.

All told, 26 people died in the two days of attacks including a total of 13 militants and their children.

Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority country, has seen a recent resurgence in homegrown militancy inspired in part by ISIS. The top security minister, Wiranto, who uses one name, said the government will attempt to hasten passage of an updated anti-terrorism law that has languished in parliament. The U.S. blames JAD for a suicide bombing and gun attack in Jakarta in January 2016 that left four people dead and 25 injured. The motorcycles, which moved closely together, pulled up alongside a vehicle and four officers manning opposite sides of the checkpoint.

Indonesia's deadliest terrorist attack occurred in 2002, when bombs exploded on the tourist island of Bali, killing 202 people in one night, mostly foreigners. The four perpetrators on two motorbikes died after driving into the building gateway and detonating explosives, according to police, who said an 8-year-old girl on one of the motorcycles was thrown from the vehicle but survived.

The families would meet at the home of father Dita Oepriarto, where the family of six orchestrated a plan to bomb Christian churches. The mother, with her two daughters, attacked the Christian Church of Diponegoro, he said.
