Facebook suspends 200 apps over Cambridge Analytica fiasco

Facebook suspends around 200 suspicious apps of “thousands investigated”

Since suspending Cambridge Analytica for using an app to exploit user information almost two months ago, Facebook says it has now suspended an additional 200 more apps.

Rather than sell the data, the developers behind the myPersonality app gave researchers access to Facebook users' sensitive information and exposed 3 million people in a massive leak.

Now, the firm's VP of Product Partnerships, Ime Archibong, has posted an update on the situation claiming that the investigation "is in full swing".

Archibing said that wherever the Facebook team would find evidence that an app misused data, we would ban it and notify people via the website.

Facebook's investigation has already led to the suspension of around 200 apps which will be analyzed to see "whether they did in fact misuse any data". All apps that were given access to user data prior to its policy change in 2015, as well as those demonstrating "suspicious behavior" since then, would be audited as part of a company-wide investigation. "And if we find developers [who] misused personally identifiable information, we will ban them and tell everyone affected by those apps".

Facebook said that it suspended the myPersonality app on 7 April, and adding that it may permanently removed from the platform depending on the results of the social network's ongoing investigation.

On March 21, Zuckerberg announced that the company would examine how thousands of apps created by other companies used the data of Facebook users.

Yet another rogue Facebook app that gathered and sold "intimate" details on millions of users has come to light.

In the wake of the Cambridge Analytica data fiasco, there were a ton of complaints that Facebook, Inc. It's not entirely certain that these apps are actually at fault, but the social media company has suspended them pending a more extensive investigation.

One question around all of this is whether Facebook will publicly publish a list of suspended apps.

Third, we want to make sure you understand which apps you've allowed to access your data.
