Facebook goes after apps that access its users' data, suspends 200

Social Networking Lifts Concerns About Data Misuse

Facebook is once again at the center of a scandal over data mining on its platform, after it was discovered that another personality quiz hosted on the social network harvested the personal information of some three million people. New Scientist reports that some 280 people at different technology companies were given access and, somewhere along the way, that data ended up on a website that was very insecure.

On May 1, the United Kingdom threatened Zuckerberg with a formal summons if he were to set foot on United Kingdom soil, in an attempt to get Facebook's CEO to personally testify about the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The company CEO Mark Zuckerberg had promised a thorough investigation and audit into apps that had access to information before Facebook changed its platform policies in 2014 - significantly reducing the data apps could access. First, a comprehensive review to identify every app that had access to this amount of Facebook data.

Over 280 people from almost 150 institutions eventually gained access to the full data set by registering as a collaborator to the project. The data allegedly includes information like age, gender, and relationship status of 4.3 million people.

Grabbing the login details from GitHub granted access to the sensitive data "in less than a minute" and has, in fact, been publicly visible on the website for the past four years. A Cambridge Analytica spokesperson said the company used Twitter for political advertising but insisted that it had never "undertaken a project with GSR focusing on Twitter data and Cambridge Analytica has never received Twitter data from GSR". About 270,000 people downloaded Kogan's personality-quiz app, which shared information on the people and their friends that then was improperly passed to Cambridge Analytica.

'This is taking a long time': David Goodall's last words revealed
According to Exit International which represented Goodall said that he passed away while listening to Beethoven's Ode to Joy . In the U.S. , assisted suicide is legal in Oregon, Vermont, Washington, California, Colorado, Hawaii and Washington, D.C.

KitGuru Says: Despite three million affected users being far smaller than that of the 87 million caught by Cambridge Analytica, it is still scarily similar in practice.

Ime Archibong, the Facebook Product Partnerships Vice President, said that we are deeply involved in the investigation.

Experts are anxious that the researchers didn't do enough to anonymize the data, as well.

People had to register as a project collaborator to get access to the full data set, and more than 280 people from almost 150 institutions did so, including university researchers and those from companies including Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo. However, this is yet another reminder that when you agree to sharing your data with one app, it is going to be mass circulated, ending up online. Another case of too little, too late...
