Stamp Out Hunger/MEND Food Drive

Letter carrier/Rotarians to have food drive this Saturday

McLennan County letter carriers will be joining forces with the National Association of Letter Carriers on Saturday for the largest one-day food drive in the nation.

With 49 million people facing hunger every day in America, including almost 16 million children, this drive is one way you can help those in your own city or town who need help.

Richard Hatzenbuhler says, "We saw as letter carriers the need in our community for food".

People across the country left more than letters out for for the mailman.

Operators of food banks point out that the timing for the drive is crucial: Food donations from the community tend to slow down in the summer, while the need continues. They take period trips to a central Food Bank truck throughout the day to drop off what they've collected.

Five more Australian MP's ousted for dual citizenship
Labor leader Bill Shorten has been accused of "lying" to the Australian people over the dual citizenship fiasco. Senator Gallagher's replacement in the upper house will come from Labor under a 1977 constitutional change.

"I just ask people the bag that was delivered to their house feel free to leave the sack underneath your mailbox and the carrier will pick it up on his rounds", Hassler said.

These blue plastic bags are filled with canned food for the 26th annual "Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive". Letter carriers picked up the donations along their routes today. In Columbus, post cards announcing the food drive were delivered as part of the regular mail service.

Last year, postal workers gathered more than 90,000 pounds of food for the Westmoreland County Food Bank. Last year's drive collected more than 80 million pounds of nonperishable food, and "all food collected stays local", according to a press release.

"For them, it really helps out". They'll then be distributed to food banks across the state, getting them through the next month or so.
