Northfield high school is ranked No. 31 among all Minnesota high schools in a report put out by U.S. News and World Report, earning it a silver medal.

The study looks at how schools are best serving all students - including historically under-served populations - and how students are being prepared for college-level coursework.

To create the rankings, U.S. News started with more than 28,800 public high schools across all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Solar energy systems could power all new homes in California
While net-zero remains an admirable goal, getting there is not yet cost-effective, state officials and experts said. In addition to single-family homes, they would apply to new multifamily buildings of three stories or less.

Each school's ranking was derived after analyzing data covering a number of factors, including graduation rates, diversity, A.P. and International Baccalaureate test data, enrollment, participation in free or reduced-price lunch programs, and state assessments.

In addition, Eastern, Towson, Western, Carver Center, and Sparrows Point appeared on the magazine's list of best magnet schools in the nation, and Eastern Tech and Towson appeared on the list of best STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) schools. Public high schools in the BASIS charter school network in Arizona dominated the top of the national rankings, claiming the first five spots. The gold medal went to the top 500 schools based on highest college readiness, silver went to high-performing schools based on lower college readiness and bronze went to high-performing schools based on state exam performance, according to the website.

Florida finished behind Massachusetts, California and Maryland.
