Even After Dying, Our Sun's Future looks Bright

The sun will go out in a blaze of glory that will destroy Earth

Even if it has a low mass, this heat will make the envelope bright and visible.

This perplexing, apparent contradiction posed "a long-standing mystery" about the end-of-life stages in low-mass stars, the global team of researchers wrote in the study.

Scientists have often wondered about what the state of the sun will be when it dies, but a new study has finally confirmed what will likely happen many years now. The model forecasts the life process of the stars having different masses.

As a star meets its end, it ejects up to half its mass into space creating an envelope of gas and debris and exposing the star's core.

But a new study from a group of worldwide researchers, led by Albert Zijlstra from the University of Manchester, gives a pretty good idea of what will happen to the sun when it finally dies.

Although it was previously believed that our sun's mass is too low to generate a white dwarf and, subsequently, a visible planetary nebula, the model predicts that this is not the case anymore.

The sun is a low mass star.

Separately, an global team of astronomers has used top-notch computer modelling techniques to determine that our Sun's fate will mirror that of 90 percent of other stars: it will supposedly shrink down from a red giant to become a white dwarf and subsequently end up as a planetary nebula, something that humans stand little chance of witnessing. An estimated 90 percent of dying stars emit a ghostly dust halo, which persists for thousands of years; but computer models established decades ago suggested that a star would need to be about twice the mass of our sun to generate a cloud bright enough to be seen, the study authors reported. The Professor continued to say that the envelope could measure near about half of the mass of the original star.

The team used trial-and-error to pinpoint two models that indicate key thresholds in the planetary nebulae. "This reveals the star's core, which by this point in the star's life is running out of fuel, eventually turning off and before finally dying", Albert Zijlstra, co-author of the paper and a professor of astrophysics at the University of Manchester, said.

How Did They Discover It?

"Problem solved, after 25 years!" he added. Only while the core is still hot, the envelope will shine - making it visible tens of millions of light years away.

But, for years, scientists weren't sure if the sun in our galaxy would follow the same fate: it was thought to have too low mass to create a visible planetary nebula.

Coincidentally, the new findings also show that the mass of the sun is nearly exactly the lower limit for producing a visible planetary nebula.

The new models show that after the ejection of the envelope, the stars heat up three times faster than found in older models.
