What's the rationale behind demand to remove Jinnah's portrait? asks Islamic body

Yogi govt wades into Jinnah row as AMU students mull approaching SC

AMU students have been agitating for the past few days, demanding action against the right-wing protesters, who entered the campus and demanded removal of Jinnah's portrait from the student union's office.

Two persons were on Sunday arrested in connection with the violence on Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) campus over Pakistan founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah's portrait on May 2.

After watching the videos of AMU students being chased by the police and being "mercilessly beaten up", he felt it was time to speak out against this "injustice". Jinnah, the founder member of the University Court, had also been given this honour before Partition.

Singh said, "If you are not a Muslim but support the portrait's presence because you think that protests against it curbs your freedom, then you should think if you would like on the walls of your house a picture of somebody whose hands are stained with the blood of your own people".

This portrait, along with all those who have been accorded the life membership of AMU Students' Union, including Mahatma Gandhi, is a part of the rich archival legacy of this institution. We can't wait for them to act on this issue.

Usmani told newspersons that there appears to be a deliberate move to destabilize the Aligarh Muslim University by raising this issue at the present juncture. "A case was also registered in this context". "They beat, detained us illegally but let them go free", The Indian Express quoted AMU Students' Union (AMUSU) secretary Mohammad Fahad as saying.

Internet had remained suspended in Aligarh from Friday evening to Saturday mid-night due to communal flare-up.

The AMU students also clashed with the police, resulting in 28 students and 13 policemen sustaining injuries. "Keeping that in mind, the district magistrate of the area has imposed section 144 of CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure)", said Aligarh Additional District Magistrate Shyam Bahadur.

Meanwhile, the row seems to have spread to other places as well, with students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and the Delhi University (DU) also gathering outside the Uttar Pradesh Bhawan in Delhi in protest.

Kidwai said the students were holding protests in a democratic manner and had three demands.
