In this clash, almost 70 Palestinians were shot and wounded with live fire, three of them critically, and 400 more suffered injuries due to tear gas along the Gaza side of the 25-mile border fence, Palestinian Health Ministry shared.

Israeli security forces have killed five Palestinian children and injured hundreds others during protests in Gaza over the past five weeks, UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) said on Friday.

Protesters of the "Great March of the Return" used slingshots to shoot down the drone as Israeli soldiers responded with bullets and volleys of tear gas.

The past few weeks have seen tensions rise between Hamas-ruled Gaza and Israel.

Among the wounded, around 82 people were injured in live fires while 800 fell ill by gas inhalation after the Israeli forces fired tear gas canisters, Reuters cited doctors as saying. Alternatives, such as accommodating refugees and their descendants in a future Palestinian state, have been discussed in peace talks that date back to 1993 but which are now stalled.

Noting that children have been showing signs of severe distress and trauma, Cappelaere said: "The escalating violence in Gaza has exacerbated the suffering of children whose lives have already been unbearably hard for several years".

The Ynet news site, quoting sources in Gaza, said the men, including senior members of the Hamas military wing, had been trying to dismantle an old Israeli missile that had failed to explode.

Israeli officials have denied the allegation.

Demonstrators are demanding the right to return to their homes seized by Israel in 1948, which Israel argues would effectively spell the end of their country.

The army also said that "in addition, a number of suspects arrived near the border fence in order to destroy it" and that troops opened fire on them before they returned to the Strip. While the peace talks are stuck, Israeli settlements in the occupied territories have expanded.

Trump's moves angered Palestinian leaders, who have refused to talk to his administration, accusing it of pro-Israel bias.

Israel has also launched several wars on the Palestinian sliver, the last of which began in early July 2014 and ended in late August the same year. Pompeo said the United States was "fully supportive" of Israel's right to defend itself.
