Angels' Ohtani notches 2nd straight multi-hit game

Albert Pujols Pursuit of 3000 Hits is Something To Watch

After lining out in his first at-bat and walking in his second plate appearance Friday night at Seattle's Safeco Field, Pujols reached the milestone when he singled on a soft liner to right field with two outs in the fifth inning off Mariners starter Mike Leake.

The most recent player before Pujols to join the 3,000 hit club was Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre, who reached the milestone hit on July 30, 2017. The Angels ended up winning the game 5-0 over the Seattle Mariners.

With Rookie Shohei Ohtani dominating numerous headlines surrounding the team and Superstar Mike Trout having an excellent start to the season, people are forgetting one of the big storylines in Anaheim.

Pujols went on to single in the ninth inning, passing Roberto Clemente for No. 31 on the MLB's career list with his 3,001st hit.

Cabrera is sitting on 2,666 hits, while Cano has registered 2,408 with plenty more to come, in his estimation. He's the first player to reach the mark since Adrian Beltre previous year against Baltimore.

Pujols signed with the Angels in 2012, when their general manager was current Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto.

Those cheers turned to boos when Ohtani was announced.

Over the last seven seasons in Los Angeles, Pujols has collected 927 hits, including 175 homers. He won three MVPs and finished second in the voting four other times. Being the 402nd overall pick in the draft, Pujols just hoped to make a Major League roster. He threw 5 1/3 innings and matched a season-high with four walks. Two-way Japanese sensation Shohei Ohtani's arrival as the Angels' primary DH has put Pujols in the field, where he remains a capable defender. Scioscia said Ohtani's bullpen session on Friday went well and as long as there aren't any issues when he's re-examined on Saturday he's expected to start the series finale in Seattle. LHP JC Ramirez was transferred to the 60-day DL. Gonzales allowed two earned runs in six innings in his last start against Cleveland.
