Local elections: Labour predicts 'mixed night' as Tories gain ground outside London

Recent national opinion polls have seen Conservatives and Labour running virtually neck-and-neck- but the local elections could be a different story

Results showed May was likely to avoid the kind of widespread losses that would dramatically weaken her authority over Conservative lawmakers ahead of key tests of her plans to pull out of the EU customs union.

Across England, more than 4,000 seats were contested in around 150 councils, including all 32 London boroughs, as well as every ward in Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle. Brexit-voting boroughs in the Midlands, such as Walsall, which returned a Conservative MP for the first time since 1976 in last year's snap general election is likely to go Tory. But we've never had nothing like this before."Turnout is usually low - only around one third of voters bothered in last year's local elections, compared to 69 percent in the national vote in June".

Away from the local elections, a parliamentary by-election in Tyrone West, Northern Ireland, saw Sinn Fein's Orfhlaith Begley hold the seat for her party.

How can you tell who's won?

Counting was set to continue throughout Friday, when mayoral results will also be declared.

What are the results in your council election?

The Conservatives, who are defending about 1,350 seats, will hope to pick up votes in Leave-backing parts of the country.

The results from Great Yarmouth and Norwich are expected later today.

Both Australia and the U.S. are concerned about freedom of navigation across important trade shipping routes. Philip Davidson said last month that China's forward operating bases appear to already be complete.

The Conservatives lost five seats, while Labour gained four, leaving the council without a single party in overall control. The council has faced much local anger over its handling of the tragedy.

- Unlike national elections that decide seats in parliament, or the 2016 European Union referendum, Thursday's (May 3) elections are open to European Union nationals registered and resident in electing boroughs.

Meanwhile, Dudley remained in no overall control but the council's Tory leader was confident a UKIP councillor and independent Conservative would join their group to hand them effective control.

London is the major battleground after recent polls pointed towards a substantial swing to Labour and the party believes it has a "fighting chance" in Barnet.

Bromley, Gosport, Swindon, Watford and Woking councils have all trialled the scheme to help cut down voter fraud.

Carrie Symonds, the Conservative Party's director of communications, said Labour "threw the kitchen sink" at Wandsworth, adding it was "brilliant news" they had failed.

The scheme had been already criticized by the Electoral Reform Society, which said the measures would affect not only the elderly, but homeless, disabled, young people and people from ethnic backgrounds.
