And if some future Fitbit health applications fall under the umbrella of what the FDA deems SaMD products, Teppler worries about potential patient safety concerns. Fitbit will use the API to ensure that its data is safely transferred to Google's cloud.

In press statement, Fitbit CEO James Park said: "This collaboration will accelerate the pace of innovation to define the next generation of healthcare and wearables".

Another wrinkle to this collaboration is that Google and Fitbit will collaborate on both consumer and enterprise products. Working together provides an exciting opportunity to leverage Fitbit's leading wearables brand, community, data, and popular devices alongside Google's expertise in building platforms, software and services. People who strap Fitbits, smartwatches, and other devices to their wrists are often limited to viewing their data in consumer-grade apps that deliver only modest detail on activity, movement, and general health. Fitbit's ability to contribute data to the Google Cloud Healthcare API provides plenty of additional data to work with, especially since the data can be connected to electronic medical records. Twine Health will also be a part of Fitbit's collaboration with Google and will make it easier for clinicians and patients to collaborate on care, as well as lead to improved health outcomes. The two companies will also seek to help better manage chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes by making use of services such as Twine Health.

Google launched the Healthcare API in March 2018 to address significant interoperability challenges in health care data. "We hope that by helping them take advantage of our highly secure platform and support for open standards, we can bring better health to more people around the world".

Greater patient engagement and receipt of day-to-day fitness and health data into the EMR offers great potential, Greene says. Apple recently began allowing patients of certain health providers to download and store their EHR data on their iPhones alongside their own patient-generated data.

Neither Fitbit nor Google immediately responded to Information Security Media Group's requests for comment.
