VA nominee Dr. Ronny Jackson withdraws

White House Doctor Withdraws Name to be Next Veterans Chief

Jerry Moran, R-Kan., on Tuesday.

The White House physician, Rear Admiral Ronny Jackson, has chose to withdraw his name from consideration as the head of the Veterans Affairs agency, after lawmakers called for a probe into allegations of professional misconduct and excessive drinking.

According to the file, Dr Jackson was described as "flat-out unethical", "100% bad temper", "toxic", "explosive", "abusive" and "volatile".

White House physician Rear Admiral Ronny Jackson speaks at the press briefing at the White House in January. "That should be pretty easy to prove".

Jackson announced his withdraw on Thursday morning, after facing multiple allegations this week that he created a hostile work environment, had issues with "excessive drinking" on the job and overprescribed medication.

The meeting came after Democratic staff on the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee compiled a two-page document describing allegations made by 23 unnamed colleagues and former colleagues, most of whom are still in the military. "He treated the people below him very, very poorly", Mr Tester, the ranking Democrat on the Senate veterans affairs committee, said.

"Jon Tester took a highly respected man by Presidents Trump, Obama and Bush and personally led the Democrat attack to destroy Ronny Jackson and fight President Trump", Rosendale said in a statement.

Tester had said Jackson's nickname was "the candyman" because of his willingness to hand out prescription drugs.

Mr. Cornyn defended Dr. Jackson's reported distribution of Ambien and other drugs during long trips as nothing out of the ordinary. Trump says: "I think Jon Tester has to have a big price to pay in Montana".

"We stand behind him 100 percent depending on what he decides to do".

Jackson is hardly the first Trump nominee to withdraw before even making it to the Senate confirmation hearing.

Tester struck a heavy blow against Jackson Wednesday by releasing a memo detailing allegations of Jackson's unprofessional behavior at the White House, such as drunkenness and loose handling of prescription drugs.

"Ronny's positive impact can not be overstated", Obama wrote in 2015.

How did White House respond?

A West Texas native, he attended Texas A&M University and the University of Texas Medical Branch, specializing in emergency medicine.

Spokeswoman Sarah Sanders indicated that Jackson was staying on in his post at the White House, saying that "he is here at work today".

The rivalry between Jackson and Dr. Jeffrey Kuhlman prompted a "command climate assessment" of the medical unit that year, which found low morale.

In a section on Jackson's prescribing practices, the summary said that in one case, missing Percocet tabs threw members of the White House Medical Unit into a panic - but it turned out he had prescribed a "large supply" of the opioid to a White House Military Office staffer.

Jackson has worked in the White House since 2006. "No, there was not", he said before brushing off questions about whether he would withdraw.

"What do you need it for?"

Trump told Fox & Friends that there was "no proof" of the allegations. "I don't want to put a man through a process like this. It's too ugly and disgusting". Prior to his service on the presidential physician's team, he served as an emergency medicine physician in the mid-2000s and was deployed to Iraq.

Although they do not get to vote on Jackson's nomination, lawmakers in the House are weighing in as well. President Trump nominated Jackson to be VA Secretary on March 28 after firing former VA Secretary David Shulkin.
