Bob Dorough, Jazz Musician Best Known For 'Schoolhouse Rock!,' Dead At 94

Bob Dorough

His family told the Associated Press that Dorough died Monday at his home in Mount Bethel, PA, but did not give a cause. Dorough sang on it, and the pair teamed up again four years later for "Nothing Like You" from Davis' Sorcerer LP.

Bob Dorough, the jazz musician who wrote numerous best-loved Schoolhouse Rock songs, has died at age 94. The result was "Three Is a Magic Number", and it worked so well that Macall's agency created a storyboard and pitched it to Michael Eisner, who ran children's programming for ABC.

He also wrote the song "Devil May Care", which jazz great Miles Davis recorded as an instrumental version.

In 1971, he received a commission to "set the multiplication tables to music, which led to the creation of ABC-TV's SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK, Saturday morning cartoons that aired from 1973-1985, then returned for another five years in the '90s". He released a number of solo albums, including three for Blue Note Records. Dorough wrote and performed iconic numbers including "My Hero, Zero" and "Three Is a Magic Number".

Armenian Opposition Leader Wants to Become PM
In 2008, following reports of widespread electoral fraud, sit-in protests formed in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. It was not immediately clear whether that signalled specific support for Pashinyan's candidacy or not.

"After the fully Dorough-penned Multiplication Rock, the series" contributors expanded to include Lynn Ahrens, Dave Frishberg (writer of "I'm Just a Bill") and George Newall, with Dorough staying on as musical director.

Other famous works Dorough contributed to many a childhood were "Conjunction Junction", "Electricity, Electricity" and "Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here".

Later in life, Dorough became a mentor to the British-American singer, actress and comedian Nellie McKay, whom he first met in 1997, McKay tells NPR.
