Here's What's New In Gmail's Big Productivity-Boosting Update

The new Gmail, as you can guess, is all about these little, intuitive changes which are clearly created to tackle its competitors like Outlook which up until now, had a much more tempting set of features.

Google is taking the lid off its oft-hinted redesign of Gmail, which includes a new look, a host of fresh features, increased security and an injection of artificial intelligence.

You need to go to the cog wheel in the top right corner of Gmail and select "Try the new Gmail" to enable these settings.

The update, which is live on an opt-in basis worldwide from Wednesday morning, includes a whole raft of new features and a refinement to the user interface.

A new Confidential Mode is perhaps the biggest security/privacy investment out of this batch of announcements. It's like Gmail got a facelift to look cuter. Basically, Gmail will try to figure out whether an email you missed is important to you and remind you to follow up automatically sometime later. If a message is locked, it needs to be authenticated either by granting access or using additional two-factor authentication via SMS. This feature will allow a user to send an email with restrictions such as an expiry, or limiting the option to forwards, copy download or print messages. With the new update, Gmail will track which email subscriptions you regularly attend and which you throw it in the trash. If they're using a different email client, they'll have to click on a link to see your confidential message. And you can drag emails into Tasks to add them to your list.

Smart Replies are awesome on mobile, and they're coming to the web.

The new setting does not override corporate email retention policies or present new obstacles to law enforcement. You can also add little details on any task you need to focus on.

Cubs Game Notes For Friday @ Colorado
Kyle Hendricks (1-1) struck out six and allowed three runs on five hits in five innings to pick up his first win of the season. Petersburg, Fla.: Slumping Carlos Gomez hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning and Tampa Bay completed a three-game sweep.

Today, however, Google announced a bevy of updates including the first major redesign of Gmail's web interface in years.

Some features are available now, while others are rolling out over the next few weeks. The AI-infused technology for suggesting responses to emails, which originated in Inbox in 2015, is now available in Gmail's browser-based version as well as its mobile-app variants.

Gmail will now also detect if you are receiving promotional content repeatedly from particular handles and then adds a card to quickly unsubscribe to such emails.

Google makes sure you are aware when a message in your Gmail inbox is risky.

What are you most excited to see in the new Gmail?

Starting today, Gmail will bother you with mobile notifications only when it thinks that an email is important. On a 13.3-inch Apple MacBook Pro, the old Gmail shows more emails in all three display modes.

The upshot of doing it this way means Google has been able to build some other clever functionality on top: These emails can now be set to expire, or you can revoke access to its contents (effectively the recipient is viewing the contents on a space that you control).
