The list of names was made public following a meeting of the BJP's Central Election Committee at the party headquarters in Delhi.

During his visit to Karnataka on 7 and 8 April, Congress president Rahul Gandhi too had deliberated on the names of candidates and their ability to win.

"First list of 72 BJP candidates for ensuing general election to the legislative assembly of Karnataka 2018 finalised by BJP Central Election Committee".

They are P. Rajiv (Kudachi), A.S. Nadahali (Muddebihal), Malikayya Guttedar (Afzalpura), C.P. Yogeshwar (Channapatna), Mallikarjun Khuba (Basavakalyan), Dr. Shivaraj Patil (Raichur), Haladi Srinivas Shetty (Kundapur), Gulihatti Shekhar (Hosanagar), Basangouda Patil Yatnal (Vijayapura City) and Gaviyappa (Vijayanagar).

BJP becomes the second party after Janata Dal (Secular) to announce a limited candidate list for the 12 May polls, that is fast turning into one of the most fiercely contested polls in recent times.

The BJP has been doggedly pursuing to recapture Karnataka after it lost power in the state in 2013.

He returned to BJP following the announcement of Narendra Modi as party's prime ministerial candidate ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

The Karnataka Congress on Tuesday had alerted that a fake list of candidates of the Indian National Congress for the forthcoming assembly elections in the state is being diffused on the social media.
