Trump considering pardon for black boxer convicted of 'immorality'

President Trump said he is considering a pardon for boxer Jack Johnson

Trump's tweet showcases his presidential power to pardon at a time when several men close to him are facing significant legal troubles. ".I am considering a Full Pardon!".

According to Jennifer Hansler of CNN.com, Johnson "was convicted in 1913 under the Mann Act for taking his white girlfriend across state lines for "immoral" purposes".

President Trump on Saturday tweeted that he's considering a "full pardon" for the late Jack Johnson, the world's first black champion boxer, at the prompting of Sylvester Stallone. After falling short in their first attempt at building a case against Johnson, assistant U.S. District Attorney Harry A. Parkin asked the Justice Department's Bureau of Investigation to "secure evidence [of] illegal transportation by Johnson of any other women for an immoral goal". George W Bush and Barack Obama, the first black president, did not act on the matter but the Arizona senator and 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain has supported legislation for a pardon.

The son of former slaves, he defeated Tommy Burns for the heavyweight title in 1908 at a time when blacks and whites rarely entered the same ring. He skipped bail and fled to Europe, but served nearly a year behind bars when he returned to the U.S.in 1920. Most recently, he pardoned "Scooter" Libby, the adviser to former Vice President Dick Cheney who was convicted in 2007 of perjury and obstruction of justice in a Central Intelligence Agency leak case.

The Texas brawler, who typically picked off opponents as they exhausted, claimed a resounding victory in the "Fight of the Century", a bout against former champion James Jeffries, amid huge racial tensions. Johnson was sentenced to a year and one day in prison. He died in 1946. She remembers learning about Johnson when she was in sixth grade during Black History Month, and only learned later that he was kin.

Trump isn't the first president to be asked to give Johnson a posthumous pardon.

"Jack Johnson is a boxing and pioneer whose reputation was wrongly tarnished by a racially motivated conviction more than a century ago,"McCain said past year".

Since the turn of the century, a campaign for a posthumous pardon has gathered pace.
