Senate Foreign Relations Committee set to vote on Pompeo

Pompeo loses chance of getting favorable Senate Foreign Relations voteSHARE:sharetweetshareemail

President Donald Trump's nominee for secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, is facing serious opposition before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which may not have enough votes to recommend him for confirmation because all Democrats, and at least one Republican, have said they will oppose him.

The first Democrat to signal support for Pompeo, Sen.

Senator Chris Coons on Friday became the last Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to announce his position.

Most Republican senators are rallying behind Pompeo and urging Democrats to confirm him, especially as the Senate prepares to consider two other critical Trump nominations: Gina Haspel's already-troubled bid to be the next Central Intelligence Agency director, and Ronny Jackson's to be the next head of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Despite colleagues' reservations about his appointment to be the nation's top diplomat, Gardner has remained steadfast in his support for Pompeo since his nomination was announced.

"We are in an era where somebody like this, who is qualified, unfortunately, is likely to be voted out without recommendation or with a negative recommendation, ' Corker said Sunday on 'State of the Union" on CNN. Republican Rand Paul of Kentucky is expected to vote against him, but Sen.

Pressure is mounting on senators from both sides. "I understand that", said Sen. The senator 'is reviewing his record before making a final decision'.

"When I met with Director Pompeo, we had a productive conversation about the complex security challenges we face, including the risky threat posed by North Korea's nuclear missile program", he said in the statement.

"If he's confirmed, I'll hold Mr. Pompeo accountable to make sure he advances our country's leadership in the world and supports our embassies - including by filling critical jobs that have been vacant, like for the U.S. Ambassador to South Korea".

As the nomination moves to the Senate floor, the GOP's slim majority, which slips with the absence of Sen.

According to the Senate historian, no secretary of state nominee has received an unfavorable committee vote going back to 1925. Trump has shown he is more than willing to get rid of subordinates who don't meet his expectations - and Pompeo is not one of them.

"Democrats, especially on the Foreign Relations Committee, are really engaged in shameful political behavior, ' Cotton said Sunday on CBS" 'Face the Nation'.

But with Coons' announcement, all ten Democrats on the committee have now announced that they would not support Pompeo.
