Facebook charged over use of facial recognition

Facebook fuels broad privacy debate by tracking non-users

Ruling in San Francisco, Judge James Donato said the claim meets class-action status, and allowed the class to include Facebook users in IL whose facial recognition algorithms were stored after June 7, 2011. According to Donato, he wrote that because this is now a class-action lawsuit, there is a chance that Facebook could be sued by other users as part of the class-action that could result in billions of dollars, assuming of course if other people join the lawsuit.

Facebook users sued in 2015, alleging violations of an IL state law about the privacy of biometric information.

The ruling on Monday by a U.S. federal judge in California comes as the social network is snared in a scandal over the mishandling of 87 million users' data ahead of the 2016 USA presidential election.

Lawsuit challenges the social-network giant over its gathering of facial recognition data on photos without the consent of users.

In its blogpost, the company said it believes that "once a story is rated as false, we have been able to reduce its distribution by 80 per cent, and thereby, improve accuracy of information on Facebook and reduce misinformation". Per Facebook's request, the case has been moved from IL to California.

In Tweets, Trump Fixates On James Comey, Mentions Syria Strikes And Cohen
Trump recently accused Comey of leaking classified information, saying he should be prosecuted for lying to Congress under oath. Clinton herself has pointed to Comey's actions in explaining her presidential election loss.

Facebook also contends it has been very open about the tool since its inception and allows users to turn it off and prevent themselves from being suggested in photo tags.

The company also filed a patent in 2014 for technology that lets it provide certain types of content to users based off of reading their emotions with a camera in their computer or phone.

Facing global heat over the dissemination of fake news, social networking giant Facebook has partnered fact-check portal Boom for a pilot in Karnataka, which goes to polls in May.

Over the last few weeks, Facebook has drawn intense criticism from users and governments globally over a number of issues, ranging from false news on the platform to information of over 80 million users being mined by data analytics and political consulting firm, Cambridge Analytica.

The law in question is called the Biometric Information Privacy Act, which offers users protection over security methods used by websites, including iris scan, fingerprint, voiceprint, or scans of hands.
