Uber calls self-driving cars "student drivers", agrees to expand FTC settlement

Uber is expanding its transportation options with'Uber Rent

Adding a new safety section to the Uber App so that riders can learn about key safety information, including tips built in partnership with law enforcement, driver screening processes, insurance protections and community guidelines.

Riders will also be able to designate up to five friends and family members as trusted contacts and share trip details with them during every ride, Chief Executive Officer Dara Khosrowshahi wrote in a blog post.

That feature also displays real-time location from the moving vehicle, including addresses, so riders can share that information directly with the emergency operator. But for now, it will use just about any other means to get you around.

Uber will introduce annual criminal background checks on USA drivers and a revamped app that makes it easier for riders to share their location as it tries to address concerns over user safety. They're even investing in technology to let them know if a driver has a new offense.

Uber said it would use public records to track that information and make sure people are still eligible to drive for the company. Uber halted its self-driving test program after the incident, which appears to be the first known death of a person hit by an autonomous vehicle on a public roadway.

Baby born four years after death of parents
His eyes are like my daughter, but he looks more like her dad overall ", Hu Xingxian, the mother of Liu Xi, was quoted as saying. Baby Tiantian was born in December 2017 in a hospital in Guangzhou, a port city to the northwest of Hong Kong.

Uber has also faced criticism over drivers sexually assaulting female passengers, including a 2016 case involving a woman who said she was assaulted by a driver who'd taken her to her hotel.

"We've also announced that Jeh Johnson, who is a former secretary of Homeland Security, a pre-eminent safety expert, is going to be running, chairing our safety council, which will help us get better and better and better in this regard".

The Federal Trade Commission said Uber failed to disclose the leak previous year as the agency investigated and sanctioned the company for a similar data breach that happened in 2014.

Needless to say, the FTC is not impressed, and has revised its 2017 agreement [PDF] with Uber to include civil penalties if it fails to notify the watchdog of future computer security blunders. "The strengthened provisions of the expanded settlement are created to ensure that Uber does not engage in similar misconduct in the future".

The taxi app maker reached a settlement with the FTC in August 2017 after the biz allegedly "deceived consumers about its privacy and data security practices" when, in 2014, it accidentally allowed hackers to rummage through drivers' personal information held in its Amazon-hosted cloud storage.
