Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull racks up 30th Newspoll loss

Former prime minister Tony Abbott takes part in the Pollie Pedal Bike Ride on Sunday

"If you truly believe this is exactly the sentiment of the people, then you also have an obligation not to drive your party, or the government, off a cliff", said Joyce.

"I don't think it was a very useful contribution from Barnaby Joyce", he said on Monday night's program.

Liberal senator Eric Abetz said the milestone was a false measure when Mr Turnbull used it, and it remains one now.

"Malcolm Turnbull and I know this better than anyone".

"The one issue is the poll on election day and whilst Newspolls do give us some indication, we have had in the past substantial recovery in the polls come election time, so my view is there is no such thing as an unwinnable election".

Joyce made the remarks on Monday during an interview with Sky News, shortly after the Coalition lost its 30th consecutive Newspoll.

"That's what I tried to be and to do in government and I'm sure that's what the prime minister is trying to be and to do now".

"The best way to be a good government is to have clear policies, it's to have a united team".

Citizenship Minister Alan Tudge told Q&A he wasn't impressed.

"The party room wants him to be successful in the same [way] the public do, there is no challenge to his leadership".

Deputy Liberal leader Julie Bishop said she doesn't plan on running against Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull if she is asked to.

Despite maintaining the old adage that politicians do not pay attention to the polls, Finance Minister Mathias Cormann volunteered some analysis about the Coalition's woes.

"We're actually not that far behind, the truth be told, and between now and the election there is some more work to be done, of course".

"I have been elected by my colleagues to be the deputy leader of the Liberal party, I'm Australia's foreign minister, so my priority is to focus on the jobs and responsibilities I have now". In 87 newspolls I fell behind once.

"I understand that some people want to comment on the Newspoll and what it may mean for Malcolm Turnbull but I think we need to focus on is what the Newspoll is telling us about Bill Shorten", she told ABC radio. And much of 2018 has been consumed by the resignation of Barnaby Joyce, the former deputy prime minister, after it was revealed he had an extramarital affair with a former staff member.

Mr Rudd wrote that both Mr Turnbull and Mr Shorten would be "long gone" if the same standards had been applied to them.
