Over a dozen injured after tour bus crashes in Georgia

Bus flips on its way to Masters golf tournament in Georgia, driver charged with DUI

A tour bus headed to the Masters tournament flipped over on a Georgia interstate Thursday, injuring 15 people and snarling traffic as scores of fans made the pilgrimage to one of golf's premier events.

The Georgia State Patrol said 18 people were aboard.

According to officials with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, the driver of the bus, 61-year-old Steven F. Hoppenbrouwer, is facing charges including DUI and Failure to Maintain Lane.

Sgt. Chris Wright of the Georgia State Patrol said the bus driver ran off the right side of Interstate 20, then overcorrected and caused the bus to overturn in the median.

Doctors Hospital in Augusta said in a statement Thursday that six of the nine passengers taken there were either in good condition or had been treated and released.

A tour bus traveling through Georgia has overturned sending more than a dozen passengers to hospitals.

The bus was en route to the world-renown golf tournament, which started at the Augusta National Golf Club Thursday morning. Wright said investigators believe Hoppenbrouwer had been using drugs, not alcohol. "They are fortunate. They went to a hospital to get checked out", Claud said. Seven others were taken to Doctors Hospital, but their conditions are unknown, WJBF reported.

"Five of those victims were in serious condition and two were in fair condition", Augusta University Medical Center Chief Medical Officer Dr. Phillip Coule said.

The bus, which was carrying a group from Atlanta to the tournament, is owned by Jet Executive Limousine, troopers said.

A representative who answered a phone number for the Suwanee, Ga. -based company declined to comment because there was "no information at this time".
