Mannsville Family Loses Home in Fire

A couple vacationing reportedly saw the body and pulled it from the surf before calling authorities.

A DNA test, which could take several weeks, will determine whether the body found on Saturday was either Hannah's or Sierra's, the sheriff's office said.

Authorities have not been able to positively identify the body found on Saturday, but said the sheriff's office is "investigating the possibility that the body may be one of the two missing Hart girls".

But there has been no trace of Devonte, 15, Hannah, 16, and Sierra, 12, and authorities now believe the three missing children were also in the vehicle. Investigators said they believed the driver deliberately sped the SUV, with the six adoptive children inside, off the cliff.

Greg Baarts, acting assistant chief of the California Highway Patrol's northern division, said preliminary data from the SUV's air bag module suggested that the vehicle probably came to a stop at a gravel pullout roughly 70 feet from the cliff before it accelerated and "went straight off the edge".

They could have also been swept away by seawater because no one in the SUV was wearing a seatbelt, officials said.

"Information obtained through interviews with family and friends indicated it was rare for the family to be apart, especially while traveling", a news release from the sheriff's office says.

Three days before the crash, neighbors had called Child Protective Services after two disturbing encounters with the children. She was sentenced to community service and one year of probation.

Devonte, a black boy who is still missing, drew national attention after he was photographed in tears while hugging a white police officer during a 2014 protest.

Authorities said the home was "neat and in order" with "no obvious signs of violence".

In the affidavit requesting the search warrant, a Clark County sheriff's deputy says he is seeking evidence on what happened to the family, including possible suicide notes.
