Apple May Ditch Intel Chips For Macs By 2020

Apple users will be allowed to delete personal information from the company servers

Apple is reportedly working on its own processors for its Mac computers, which could ship as soon as 2020, according to reports from Bloomberg. The Kalamata initiative will allow Apple's design and engineering teams to have a much greater control over the power and features they wish to implement.

There have been previous rumors circulating that Apple is planning on creating its own ARM-based core processor chips for its Mac lineup in order to reduce its current dependence on Intel.

The shares of the world's leading manufacturer of computer chips dipped a worrisome nine percent on Wednesday, April 3rd following a report by Bloomberg that Apple was ditching it in favor of simply making its own chips in the future.

"While it's possible that Apple may replace Intel in some of its lower-end product lines, we think it will be hard for Apple to completely replace Intel by 2020, especially on its higher-end offerings", said Summit Insights group analyst Kinngai Chan. Aside from the processors in its Macs, Apple also uses Intel's modem chips in some iPhones. Companies such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, and a handful of others rely on Intel for their computers' chips. The Cupertino-based company would also be able to more tightly integrate hardware and software.

NYPD releases video in connection with police-involved fatal shooting
Surveillance video from April 5, 2018, shows Saheed Vassell brandishing a metal object before being fatally shot by police. In response, officers shot that man - identified as Saheed Vassell - because they believed the metal object was a gun.

Apple may be concerned about security breaches that have been associated with Intel chips and want to close the loop around the production of their products.

The rumour has damaged Intel's share price which fell yesterday in the US - Apple gear accounts for around five percent of Intel's annual revenue according to Bloomberg, so that's a small but valuable chunk of income. Apple is working on a new software platform called Marzipan (which may already be released this year), which makes it possible to run apps for the iPhone and iPad on the Macs. The company has had a virtual monopoly on the market for years, with the only serious competition coming from Advanced Micro Devices, better known as AMD. Apple-made chips are also present in iPhones, iPads and Apple watches. Keep in mind that the Apple Watch dropping in 2018 will have thinner bezels and a slightly bigger display but it does not mean that it will take advantage of microLED technology. It was a partnership that shook up the PC industry and saw Apple shift away from chips co-developed by IBM and Motorola.

While Apple is down the list of computer sellers by unit shipments, it's third when measured by revenue a year ago, highlighting the premium status of its products.
