Several dead after car drives into crowd in Germany

German news agency dpa says several people were killed after a car crashes into the crowd in city of Muenster

A van crashed into a crowd in the western German city of Muenster on Saturday, killing at least three people and injuring multiple others.

Police say they're investigating witness reports that other people may have fled from the van after the incident, the Associated Press reports.

A German news agency has quoted police as saying the driver of that vehicle in Muenster has killed himself.

"With daunt, I learned of the horrendous occurrence in Muenster", Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said in an announcement, including, "Police in Muenster and all through (the government territory of North Rhine-Westphalia) are now striving to examine the issue".

Authorities also said a suspicious object was found in the van but did not specify what it was.

All three of the attackers were killed by the police who arrived at the scene several minutes later.

Photographs posted on social media showed tables and chairs strewn outside the Grosser Kiepenkerl restaurant, which is popular with tourists.

The police spokeswoman said: "The danger is over".

Police and paramedics, including helicopter units, from the wider area of North-Rhine Westphalia were deployed to the scene.

Muenster Mayor Markus Lewe said the reason for the crash was still unclear. The incident took place at the square surrounding the Kiepenkerl statue, a city landmark that commemorates a traveling peddler.

Muenster, a major university city, has about 300,000 residents and an attractive city center rebuilt after World War II.

IS also claimed several similar attacks in Europe, including a rampage along Barcelona's Las Ramblas boulevard in August 2017 that killed 14 and left more than 100 injured.

"There is no indication at the moment that there is any Islamist connection", said Reul, who is from Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats.

On December 19, 2016, a truck intentionally ploughed into a crowd close to a Christmas market next to the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church at Breitscheidplatz in Berlin. "Our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones", she said.
