Russian Federation says 1100 have evacuated rebel stronghold Ghouta

Buses will carry rebel fighters and their families from their final stronghold in eastern Ghouta to Jarabulus leaving Assad’s troops free to occupy the territory

Around 150,000 civilians left Eastern Ghouta last month as the rebels were evacuated from there following a relentless offensive by government troops.

Iyad Abdelaziz was quoted as saying by The Associated Press news agency on Sunday that there was no agreement reached to have the Jaish al-Islam rebel group leave Douma for north Syria and hand over the town to government forces.

The head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdurrahman, said the Army of Islam is divided over whether to evacuate Douma, with hard-liners demanding they stay and fight.

Later Sunday, a media outlet linked to the Syrian military reported that the Army of Islam also agreed to leave to north Syria, effectively transferring control of Douma to Damascus.

Following tough negotiations held between both parties, Jaish al-Islam and Moscow reached a final deal to evacuate fighters and civilians from the city of Douma, the last rebel-held bastion in the Eastern Ghouta enclave, opening the way for regime forces to capture the entire area. There was no comment from the Army of Islam.

Syrian ally Russian Federation has struck a deal with rebels in the main town of the eastern Ghouta region to allow hundreds of civilians to leave along with fighters, a group monitoring Syria's conflict said on Sunday. It was one of the earliest hubs of the Arab Spring-styled uprising against President Bashar Assad that swept through the country in 2011. More than 120,000 others have fled their homes and sought safety with the government, according to Russia's military operation in Syria.

Jaish al-Islam has not yet confirmed the accord, amid reports hardliners within the group were refusing to leave their positions. He said Turkey was also participating in the talks.

Syrian government forces are reportedly close to taking full control of the opposition stronghold of Eastern Ghouta near the capital, Damascus. Around 1,300 fighters, activists, and civilians signed up for evacuation, according to the Observatory. Russian Federation is a key backer of the Syrian government.

The rebels were headed to Jarablus, a town in northern Syria where control of the territory is shared between Syrian rebels and Turkish forces.

The United Nations does not have any reports on any recent fighting or air raids in Syria's Eastern Ghouta following years of "besiegement and suffering", Jan Egeland, the adviser on humanitarian issues to the UN Special Envoy for Syria, said Wednesday.
