Ousted South Korean leader Park sentenced to 24 years over corruption scandal

Former South Korea president Park Geun-hye guilty of corruption

She has also been fined 18 billion won.

A trial which lasted more than 10 months and highlighted shady links between big business and politics in South Korea ended with Park being found guilty on multiple criminal charges, including bribery and abuse of power. Prosecutors previously alleged that Samsung's bribe was aimed at getting government support for a smooth company leadership transition, but the court said there was not enough evidence to prove that Samsung sought such favor from the government. "The President abused the power which was given to her by the citizens", the judge said, adding a tough sentence was needed to send a firm message to the country's future leaders. She was found guilty of abuse of power, coercion, fraud and bribery. Park can appeal to a higher court.

But the court said most of Samsung's payments did not constitute bribes. The court said she leaked at least 14 state secrets to Choi.

Her father was killed five years later and Park withdrew for a while but entered the political scene again in the 1990s after witnessing the effects of Asia's economic crisis.

Park Geun-hye joins the ranks of South Korea's many notorious leaders.

South Korea's presidential residence, the Blue House, issued a statement after the verdict calling it a "heartbreaking event for the nation". "Yet she has not showed much sign of remorse and kept blaming Choi and her aides", Kim said. But her presidency was controversial from the start, dogged by admissions that the country's spy agency flooded social media channels in the final days of the presidential election to help her to victory.

Brazil Sends Ex-President Lula To Prison
Lula da Silva will not be handcuffed and will be placed in a separate jail cell upon his arrest, according to the arrest warrant. Rousseff was impeached and removed from office amid corruption scandals and economic crisis in mid-2016.

Park's verdict, which lasted almost two hours, was broadcast, the first time that a verdict in a criminal case has been aired live in Korea. She will appeal the sentence.

Park has been held at a detention center near Seoul since her arrest in March 2017, but she refused to attend Friday's court session, citing sickness.

Prosecutors had been asking for a 30-year prison sentence and a fine of about $120 million to be imposed on the former president.

The heads of conglomerates involved in the scandal have also been jailed. In February, Choi was sentenced to 20 years in prison for enriching herself by using her influence to gain favour.

Park was also convicted of the charges related to her government's creation and management of an artist blacklist deemed critical of her government. He was sentenced to death but released after two years under a presidential pardon.

Park has a small group of fierce supporters - majority middle aged and older - who regularly stage rallies calling for her release and after the verdict was broadcast, thousands of them marched near the Seoul court to protest the ruling. Police said around 4,000 people gathered in the vicinity.
