Ravens sign QB Griffin to one-year deal

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Griffin is signing with the Baltimore Ravens on a one-year deal, the team announced.

Girffin hasn't played since the 20016 season.

Griffin had one of the most precipitous falls in National Football League history: In 2012 he won the rookie of the year award, led Washington to the playoffs, and was hailed as the NFL's brightest young star.

Griffin missed the 2015 season after sustaining a concussion during the preseason. The Redskins cut Griffin in 2016, and he signed with the Cleveland Browns, but only played in five games that season. The team considered bringing him in for a workout last offseason while pondering the backup quarterback situation during Joe Flacco's back injury.

The Mariners placed starting catcher Mike Zunino (oblique) on the 10-day disabled list Friday, opening the spot for Freitas. Trevor Bauer takes the hill versus the Mariners who he faced once last season.

The terms were finalized late Tuesday night, and Newsome expects RG3 to sign the contract next week.

Griffin will compete for the backup job behind Flacco, replacing unrestricted free agent Ryan Mallett. "I'm really feeling like we got a steal".

The Ravens signing RGIII shouldn't preclude Baltimore from possibly drafting a young signal-caller this year. The Washington Redskins traded three first-round picks and a second-rounder to move up four spots to select him at No. 2 overall, one pick behind Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck. "He's a very talented quarterback", coach John Harbaugh said of Griffin on Wednesday. "He really wanted to be a Raven". After a wonder rookie season, which saw him complete 65.6 percent of his passes for 3,200 yards, 20 TDs and only 5 interceptions. I believe our players are going to love the fact that he's here.
